I have a good friend who's daughter was "kind of" recruited for field hockey. I say kind of because her parents paid for her to go to many camps last summer and also paid for her to go on a few official D1 visits. The coach at Georgetown told her that they would support her application. She's got scores and GPA in the mid 50% range for Georgetown. After pushing for a LL, she finally got one two weeks ago. At the same time the admission dept asked her to change her early action application to rd. She did so with out telling her parents. When early action decisions were released yesterday she obviously didn't get one.

Should this family be worried that the LL will hold up until regular decisions are released April 1?

If admissions gave the LL conditional on RD admission, I think all is well. Parents might want to call the coach/admissions to confirm. I don’t like the deception, and if I were the parents (paying the bill) I would want to hear from someone in authority that all is well. I won’t address the deception issue, but that’s also concerning, of course.

I thought only Ivies gave LL’s? I don’t know that your friend’s daughter was “kind of” recruited; it sounds like she was just plain recruited to me. Pretty much everyone attends multiple camps beginning summer after freshman year. Most also spend money to go on many unofficial visits (an official visit is paid for by the school). This is key to becoming recruited at pretty much every D1 and top DII/DIII school in the country unless you are at the national/international level in your sport.

Georgetown does have their own version of a LL, so that sounds right - and if it is like an Ivy LL, which I am going to assume it is, then your friend’s daughter should be fine for a RD acceptance assuming she doesn’t commit a crime or fail out of school.

Also, I have heard that Georgetown recruits through RD, not ED, so that rings true too - I don’t know for sure if that is true, but it’s what I’ve heard.

^^Do you know of other schools that use LL’s (or a form of) and recruit RD?

I agree with Mayhew: My kid was told by the coach that Georgetown recruits through RD not EA. She’ll be fine.

I’ll pass this info on to my friend! It’s good to hear multiple times that Georgetown recruits through RD. Thanks everyone!

Does not sound like she is being recruited to me. If she was being recruited then there would be NO question about all of this. If they are helping her get in the school then maybe they are going to give her a walk on tryout. My sons school does this. Its D1 and the coach will get students in but they are not recruited just have an opportunity to tryout.

Well, we’ve established that Georgetown admits many (most?) recruits via RD rather than EA. What does the LL say?
Also, the fact that an athlete gets recruited, even with a LL or letter of intent, doesn’t mean that they get to compete on the varsity team. At least in the sports I’m familiar with, they try out like everybody else.
