Opinion on Chances

I am African American and Latino and my credentials are as follows:
SAT-2020
GPA-4.48
SAT II-Probably in Math 2, World History, and maybe Bio
Class Rank-N/A(School does not have class rank)

EC's
1. Varsity Football for three years
2. National Honors Society
3. Student Ambassador

Schools:
1. Georgetown
2. Cornell
3. Duke
4. Princeton
5. University of Michigan (in state)
6. UC Berkely
7. Harvard

no opinions?

What classes have you taken?

Also, your UW GPA would be helpful; along with any awards you have been given, and your community service record.

What is your GPA out of? What grade is it equivalent to? Is it weighted? Are you taking top classes? How rigorous is your school?

Those are all basic points that you probably need to add. Right now, based on your SAT scores, I could see you at Michigan and all other schools being a reach. URM cannot bail you out of a relatively low SAT score; it can only get you in once you have top scores. But maybe I’m wrong; I’ll have a better perspective if you post responses to those other questions.

I have taken ap government, ap world history, ap economics, and ap statistics so far.
my unweighted GPA is roughly a 3.9.

HYP is a reach with that SAT score. If you get a 2200+ I could see you at HYP very easily, there would be no reason not to take you. As for your SAT score now:

HYP: Reaches
1,2,3,5,6: matches/Low Reaches

As you can see, being African American/ Latino is the best thing on your app.
Cough Affirmative Action cough

Your unweighted GPA is very high, although that makes your course difficulty appear slightly on the weak side, unless I’m missing something. But I could see you at Georgetown and Cornell; Berkeley I’m not sure because they are very scores based, although being a URM might significantly help since they have a disproportionately high number of Asians.

Would being the first child in my family to go to college count as a legitimate hook that could possibly make me more appealing to the Ivys?

To catch 22…He said in a post (not the first post) that his UW GPA was 3.9. Not perfect, but it’s still excellent, although comparing it to his W GPA, it suggests that about half of his other classes are regular, less challenging courses.

And likely4right, being a URM AND first generation are both huge hooks. Putting them together, even with your SATs you have a chance at lots of top schools; just not HYPS.

So say hypothetically I was white, I would have little chances at what you all call the HYP’s? (Im assuming Harvard Princeton Yale)

I am just curious about how race factors into getting admitted into college.

Correct; in fact, unless you did something truly extraordinary for your extracurriculars, I would not recommend applying to those schools.

Hypothetically? Even with the “wonders” of AA you would have little chance at HYP without an increase in your scores and some spectacular essays; and even then it would be slim. Why do you want to hit HYP?

Affirmative action significantly raises the chance of admission for Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Hawaiians, and other races who have historically faced many hardships.

Actually, I don’t want to get into an argument over this, but Asians certainly faced hardships in the 18th and 19th centuries. Yet they managed to overcome that, and now that has all but backfired against them. I would say that the Asian applicant is more disadvantaged than a Caucasian applicant, when basing solely on race.

AA is such a thorny subject. I really dislike the concept of using discrimination to fight discrimination, it just seems contrary to the moral environment that America should promote. At the same time however, I understand that certain groups face disadvantages and that AA tries to level the playing field so to speak. It makes it hard for me to take a firm stand without suggesting either: a) We ditch AA and accept the discrepancies of difficulty that certain groups face, or b) We spread flowers and sunshine around as the last vestiges of racial discrimination and socioeconomic disadvantage disappear from the Earth!

For the time being AA really does seem to be the only “fair” (In a sort of fallacial way…) solution.

yes i agree with you guys. The asians were subjugated in society (prime example Japanese internment camps and rail roads)…I know a lot of asians are frustrated because they are stereotypically very intelligent and diligent…thus making the level of excellence especially higher for their race…all in all it’s too bad that race can play such a big part in admittance…unless your me loll.

True, true. So, OP, how good of writer are you?

Hopefully, I am able enough to write some stellar essays because apparently I can use it for HYP’s. I mean I can write pretty well, but sometimes I tend to go over the reader’s head (not in a particularly smart way but rather due to lack of explanation).

How big is your school OP? I don’t know if colleges see it this way, but 3 year varsity football is a big deal at least at my school.
