i was curious to see how yale students feel about duke's prestige level....like are they up there with you all and harvard and princeton or right below or above the other ivies or even below....just curious...i'm doing a survey and would appreciate info

No, you're not doing a survey. You're going to duke next year and the only thing you can think about is prestige, even to the point where you're considering transferring to yale before you've even set foot on duke's campus.

the real issue here is not prestige, it's insecurity.

.......Ouch.

you are right bubblehead...maybe i should be open...i was just hurt....just like all the other rejectees from yale....i really wanted to go to yale...

Well, that wasn't very nice of of bubblehead. Bet he registered just to say that.

Duke's a great school, if pretty different from Yale, and you should definitely be proud that you're going there. If prestige is what you're after, I'm sure some people turn down Yale for Duke every year, or a range of other schools for that matter. Do well at Duke, get a good recommendation and have a legitimate reason to do so, and you might be able to transfer to Yale.

Sorry things didn't work out with Yale, but you're going to a great school and you can wield your own future from this point onward.

thanks for your information...i think i understand everything now...duke can be good...yale can be good...it's all about what you make out of it...as you said people turn down duke for yale all the time and people turn down yale for duke at times too...so it is up to the person...who knows maybe i'll apply to yale medical school...and have my shot there lol

Duke is a WONDERFUL school. Do you know how many people on CC would give their left eye to be in your shoes? It is plenty prestigious. People will be impressed when you drop the "Duke bomb" on them. More importantly, it has wonderful professors, smart, engaged undergraduates, great extracurriculars, and a beautiful campus.

I understand being disappointed by not being accepted to Yale, but it's really not worth moping over at this point if you're matriculating at Duke. You'll probably face a lot worse disappointments in life. This really is an opportunity to learn about how to deal with setbacks and that's a REALLY important skill that a lot of high flying kids don't develop early enough.

Yalies don't discuss college prestige.

Duke is great. All of the professors I talked to at Duke impressed me a lot, and the students are generally very impressive as well. Yale and Duke feel very different, but I would hesitate to call one better or worse than the other.

Yale is more intellectual, and the discussion I observed was mostly theoretical, while Duke seems more action-based. You will probably enjoy that perspective after settling in at Duke.

how do you define action-based?

Like Duke has an excellect public policy department, so there's a huge academic focus on "action" in solving world problems. DukeEngage is all about service and things like that, too.

As far as I know, Yale doesn't have a public policy major... instead, they focus on the more "elementary" subjects, like economics, philosophy, polisci, etc. It's more intellectual and analytical than public policy, but they do a lot of community service, too. Those are just two approaches to the same problem. I ultimately decided that I preferred the intellectual path, but a lot of people I talked to have had a great experience with doing policy work at Duke.
