Opinionated essays

I want to write my essay on my faith/religion. If I show through as being passionate, would that freak out some admissions officers? If my religion truely is the most important element of my life, should I go for it?

I think it would really depend on the school. It could either help you or hurt you. My GC told me to avoid writing about political or philosophical topics, in the case I might offend someone. So that probably goes the same for religion. Unless you are applying to some place like Hillsdale.

There is a difference between showing your faith, and sounding like a sermon. If you choose this topic, make sure the essay is the story of YOU, and your religion, how it has guided you, etc. As you write, assume your adcom is an aethiest, buddhist, muslim or someone else with a totally different perspective (I'm assuming you're Christian...) The last thing you want to do is offend your admissions officer.

It also depends on the schools you are applying to. If you're applying to BYU, Wheaton (IL) and other religiously affiliated schools, your essay would be more appropriate than if you were applying to a super liberal school without religious affiation or participation, like many LACs.

IMO, I would look for another, less controversial topic, however if your religion really defines you, and nothing else does it as well, you can use religion. Just use caution.

I would say go ahead, but to remember that the essay is supposed to be about you. So, avoid sounding preachy, and keep the focus on how your religion adds to who you are.

I decided to write an essay about my religion...I'm not going to use it, though, but that's only because I had written better ones on other topics.
