What's your take on audiobooks? Would you consider them detrimental to one's reading abilities (e.g. pace, personal analysis, etc.)? Or do they help you get through school work quicker? Should one get used to good old fashion reading in order to perform well on the SAT or to do well in college? I would like to hear what you guys have to say. I'm predicting more cons than pros.

I've used audiobooks before. They're nice :) Just sitting in the backyard on a cool night, listening to the audiobook on your iPod. Ahhhh, relaxing. :D

I think it depends on your personal learning style. I think you would need to practice some old-fashioned reading to do well on the CR SAT but vocab could be enhanced through audiobooks and it could be a very good way to get through novels required or recommended for high school reading. I am an audio person--big radio (NPR) listener and find I can retain a lot of what I "read" via audio very well.

Oh, definitely. I think audiobooks actually made my reading speed a lot worse. I remember in my 9th grade LA class we actually took turns reading books, and after a long time of that, whenever I pick up a book, I have to read every word! It's so annoying, I just wish he didn't do that. Now I read really slowly and I want to read faster.

But sometimes it can be relaxing, I guess. Sort of like a bedtime story.

Personally, I think in terms of school work, there's no substitute for actually reading. That said, I would much rather someone listen to an audiobook than just read the sparknotes or something.

My grandmother, who is blind, listens to a lot of audiobooks, and I think they are really great for that purpose :). Also maybe for long car trips or something, though I've never actually tried that.

All the audio books I've listened to have been so extremely slow and I could read so much faster myself... and I don't even read that much.

For me its really easy to space out with audio books too, then I'll come back to Earth and be like &^&** I have no idea what I just heard.

But thats just me. :P

it def. takes a lot longer to read via audiobooks but it's sorta neat to have someone else read it for you in their own tone and stuff.
