I am torn between Tufts' Engineering and Carnegie-Mellon Engineering. Can someone offer some insight into their academics, social life, school spirit, and athletics? Your input is greatly appreciated.

as far as engineering goes cmu is the better place to be. Tufts isn't really known for its engineering.

I concur with dj. CMU is renowned for its strong engineering program. I have a friend in Carnegie Mellon engineering who chose it over Tufts and Cornell. He loves CMU and his engineering courses there. Either program at Tufts or CMU are fantastic. You cant go wrong with either.

yes, if you're looking for a very strong engineering program, CMU's the way to go. However, Pittsburg is a mundane and depressing place, so the social scene is a bit lacking

I was considering applying to CMU, but in the end applied ED to Tufts Engineering for a few reasons. One is that the program seems to be just as good as CMU's, although not as well renowned. However, at CMU I got a feeling that the different departments were not tremendously unified and that it would be difficult to switch from one to another. At Tufts, it sounds incredibly easy to switch from Engineering to AS, and I'm not 100% sure that I'll stick with engineering.
Also, while Pittsburgh was better than I was expecting it to be, I still vastly prefer Boston. I really liked the atmosphere at Tufts overall.

Tufts' engineering (undergrad) school is actually pretty integrated with the arts and sciences one, meaning you actually live among arts & sciences undergrads instead of being isolated in engineering world, and you can take a&s classes, too.
I don't have enough experience with CMU to tell you whether or not this is also the case there, but I like that Tufts doesn't separate those two undergrad schools, so there's a good mixing.
