Opinions: NYU Stern ED/2, CMU, Emory, and more! :)

I'm going to make this short because last time I posted a novel I didn't get many responses. :P

Situation:

Father died in 8th grade year, subsequently my mother went into severe depression and was on medication. I did bad in my freshman year ending with a 80.01%. Basically, if you remove my freshman year from my GPA it is about 3% more unweighted.

In 2007, I began researching basic hosting techniques. In late 2007 I got a job at a small web hosting company which I now serve as an executive team member.

In 2008, I opened a hosting company. It ran for about a year but was unsuccessful mainly due in part to my lack in business skills. I was only 14 at the time. I had some server downtimes and handled them incorrectly. In lieu, I sold my company to a large provider of web services.

In 2009, I revamped my business ideals completely. I spent months researching SBA policies and other regulatory practices. In mid 09, I opened my company, which I registered with the state as a C Corporation. I have been successful this far, generating revenues in the low-mid 5 figure range. I have a business partner who is also my age and we work on building web applications. Currently we are working on a patent pending HR site. We also cater to private clients. Since we are developing, revenue has gone down as we are not taking as many clients privately. About 2x,xxx-3x,xxx yearly.

Duties include: building company credit and establishing tradelines 40-100K, accounting, tax 1120US, support, and fiscal/legal matters with small programming on the side. Approximate 30-35 hrs/wk spent.

Projected senior grades are 95, a 6% improvement from last year unweighted. 4 APs, all honors courses taken. Calc up to II at a local community college, GPA there 3.9.
That's why I want to do ED2 for Stern.

My essay is about my ups and downs after my fathers death but mainly about my business and how it was similar to my lifetrack. I write about what I learned from my business and the life lessons, and how it changed my personality.

Chances, please? :)

with a 1400, you’re definetly notgetting into stern even if you ed.

Stern Undergraduate SAT Middle 50: From: 1400
To: 1500

By the way, I know how tough Stern is. My SAT is just about average for them but my GPA is bad for their standards. I am asking for chances based on the following situations:

a) Father died, resulting in my bad freshman grades (if they weren’t there GPA would be up 3-4%)

b) Me owning a business (and thus app’ing to a business school) - revenue in the low 5 figures, patent pending application, and several (~20/year) medium size private clients. I manage the corporate tax (1120US), building the company credit via Experian and D&B and establishing tradelines, about 55% of the support (partner does the rest), and all the finances/legal matters that need to be taken care of.

Does ^ count for anything? Can it potentially offset my grades to schools like Tepper and Stern?

Stop trying to act like a pity- case. Face the facts - a 1400 isn’t going to get you into any decent college

Haha, okay.

A 2100 is a fine score. Many good schools, including NYU Stern, have accepted countless sub 1400s. Their middle 50 is 1400-1500, but there are +/-.

By the way you only got a 1440 and you’re apping for top schools…my GPA is bad but I have a potentially valuable EC that I will have whether I get into Stern or not.

Bump:)^^^^

Everyone is trolling you mad hard I wouldn’t worry about anything your fine for stern and tepper… I got into stern with a lower sat and did just fine.

Really? Are you a current Stern student? The problem is my GPA. I’m not sure if my ECs overcome an 85%.

88% 1360. Let me rephrase I was accepted as a sophomore transfer student. I didn’t enroll for financial reasons. Im aiming to enter next fall as a junior.

You have a solid chance of making it in as a freshman. Don’t worry just write good essays, they actually read them, and you’ll be fine.

Thanks! That gives me a little hope, haha. My essays are solid and I’m getting them edited by a former adcom just to be sure I didn’t make some classic or clich

Bump:) 10char

Up^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Bump, 10char

To the top

Bump 10 char

Stop bumping your thread. You already have your answer and it’s getting really obnoxious.

Cool. If it bothers you, no need to read this thread.

I have not gotten a solid answer. Based on my ECs, GPA, and SAT, I just want some more feedback.

Thanks.

How about posting on the individual school forums on the site instead of self-bumping your own thread. Obviously no one on this particular board cares enough to give you an answer.

^what he said.

Also, for future reference, you should make a BRIEF list of stats/ecs/etc. instead of writing an essay. Some people who may have wanted to help you in the beginning probably had second thoughts after they saw what you wrote. No one cares about your life story or the process that you went through to create your business because that’s IRRELEVANT if all you need is for someone to chance you. Just say that you started a business freshman year and that you make 20k-30k yearly. That’s all we need to know.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. :)
