My son has been accepted to Furman and it is one of his top choices. I recently read that it has a very "religious" student body. Is this still true. I've also read that it is very challenging and there is grade deflation rather than inflation. My son's merit aid depends on keeping a 3.0!! How difficult would that be.

Also any info on what the kids do for fun and what the school is really like would be greatly appreciated.

Have you and your son visited? If so, what was your impression on the religiosity of the students? The institutional researcher at Furman might be able to help on the “how hard is it” question - he or she could tell you the average gpa earned by freshmen this past semester, for example. If it’s flirting with 3.0, that means half of the students didn’t hit that mark. My guess is that it would be closer to 3.3, though.

PM on the way.

The average GPA would definitely be important info to have. Thanks for your suggestions. ( I got the PM)

We did visit and my son was impressed with the campus and the programs. He didn’t get a religious feel, but that would be hard to realize from walking around campus?!?

I toured the campus once, and I did get a religious feel, but it wasn’t as strong as the generally conservative feel.

In short, my impression was very poor (for other reasons than simply that it was conservative), but it was a first impression based on very little information in general.

warriorboy, go to the Furman page on this website and you will get lots of info on FU.

My two Ds went to FU. They are not party-ers but are not super religiuos (occassional sunday chrch-goers and for special holidays like Christmas and Easter). They both loved the school. Religion is not a central theme of the school. Yes, its probably on the conservative side but theres room for evrybody. During the elections they hosted Obama, Clinton and Huckabee. They have a very prominent member of the political science area who is a Liberal and he was Sec of Education under Clinton. Former Pres Clinton came to his wife’s funeral at FU when she passed away a couple of years ago.
