Opinions on my essay topic?

I’m afraid my essay topic is super trivial compared to the very “deep” ones that others write about.

The prompt I’m writing on is

  1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

I think the best essay I could write would be about my sport. I KNOW I KNOW it’s a cliche topic, but it’s really the most meaningful topic I could write about. I’ll give you all an outline of what I’ve written.

Basically, I was always super introverted, skinny, and awkward. I also thought I was uncreative since I had no way to express myself. After I picked up my sport, I finally had something I could be passionate about and devote myself to. I got in shape, gained confidence in myself, and made some of my closest friendships and fondest memories.

That’s the summary. I know it seems really basic and simple. Of course the full draft goes into a lot more detail and definitely communicates my personality.

Do you guys think this topic can make for a good essay? If not, could you guys offer some suggestions on what I could do with it? Thanks!

It is sort of cliche, but if you can make it somewhat original and with good writing, then you will be fine.

If you’re a good writer and can truly make it original, then you’ll be fine. Focus less on the sport and more on you, the things you learned, and how you’ll use the new skills/confidence in life.

What sort of schools are you planning on applying to? For a vast majority of schools, the essays don’t have a ton of weight in the admissions process as long as they don’t reflect on you negatively. Only at the super selective schools will essays play a major role in admissions.

I have the stats for the top schools, so I will be applying to several of those. I have multiple less selective schools as well though. Thanks for your help!
