Opinions on the University of Utah?

Since there is no forum for the university. What are your opinions of it? Specifically the engineering and business programs.
I am a 34 act student with only like a 3.67 UW GPA. I am looking for a place that will challenge me and will put me in a place to get a top job in the workplace and I'm also looking for something with a outdoors vibe where I can ski.
I feel like I am in a bind. My act is good and my ECs are great but even so with my gpa I know I probably won't get into the top colleges.

Your stats are good! There are many colleges that would love to have you. What are your geographic and financial constraints?

Less than 40k-35k with merit. Will not qualify for need. Really anywhere but in the west or northeast preferred.

But not to get distracted does anyone know much about the u of u

Isn’t Utah in the west?

The University of Utah is an interesting school because it’s in a state where a reasonable argument can be made that the state flagship is a private school (BYU). From what I understand in talking to a girl from my high school that matriculated there and is now in a sorority, the social scene is somewhat more restrained than most large state schools because of the heavy Mormon influence. That’s not to say that people don’t go out and do stereotypical college things, but it’s much more minimal than other schools known for their outdoors activities like CU Boulder.

Utah is also unusual in that a huge percent of freshmen commute (something like 60% I believe). That further constrains the social scene since many students just go home on the weekend.

The girl I referred to loves her college but she also commutes from her grandmother’s house. Utah offered her a huge merit scholarship and her stats were far lower than yours. Class sizes at Utah, according to the school’s common data set tend large.

Depending on how much you can afford, plenty of Pacific Northwest schools have phenomenal outdoors clubs. They also typically have more vibrant campus lives and probably better academics.

A 34 ACT and a 3.67 UW GPA is great. You will get into academically excellent schools with those scores.

Here are some schools in the West with strong outdoors programs, a more residential student body, and solid to excellent academics:

-University of Puget Sound (IMO the second strongest LAC in the PNW)
-Reed College (will likely be unaffordable since it doesn’t give merit aid)
-Lewis & Clark College
-Colorado College
-Willamette University
-Whitman College
-Gonzaga (maybe)
-University of Washington (again, may be unaffordable)
-University of Oregon (I visited, wasn’t terribly impressed but I know people that absolutely love it)
-CU Boulder
-UC Santa Cruz (not near skiing)
-UBC Vancouver (Canada)

Are you instate for Utah ? Otherwise I don’t see any reason to attend it. Better to go with BYU>

I wouldn’t suggest BYU unless you’re a serious, practicing Mormon. The rules there are much stricter than they are at UofU (no coffee, dress code, religion class, moral questions about watching a PG13 film…)
However considering your profile, I’m sure you’d find lots of schools in the West that would be as good or better. I second the list by Whenhen, request info from all of them and then you’ll see :)

U Utah has very good departments in some fields, especially the sciences. The location in SLC is desirable for many people. It has a reputation as a commuter school so make sure your visit overlaps with a weekend so you can test that out.

Is Utah your home state? What do you plan to study?

The reason I was looking at it was it is 25 minutes from park city and the mountains and their dorms looked really cool.
I am planning to major in chem or mechanical engineering with a minor in business

And iowa is my home state.

What about Iowa State?

If your Regent Admissions Index is high enough, it should be a safety:

University of Minnesota - Twin Cities should also be within your budget as an out-of-state student.

University of Minnesota, no brainer choice for Chemical Engineering if you can afford to go OOS or if you manage to get in.

Iowa State call be used as your backup.

Utah is a fine school and will have a number of OOS and international students, especially in engineering. We looked at it for my oldest. Parties are less prevalent and more hidden.

Public buses run up to the ski areas. Skip Park City and get a Snowbird season pass.
