I'm a Math/Economics Major. I couldn't attend CalSo. So i'm really really depending on you guys for my advising.

These are the classes i'm planning to take this fall:

Astro C10 (breadth req)
Math 1 A ( pre req )
Math 53 ( pre req )
Stat 21 ( pre req )

Yes yes, i know its a lot of math and little variation. But i have no other option. I can't take Econ 1 bcoz i get credit for that. And i can't take econ 101 A becoz i need 53 for that.

So my next question is .. can i take 53 without 1b ? would telebears let me do that? and can i take both at the same time. I've heard telebears automatically drops u for classes for which the pre reqs haven't been filled.

One more thing.. which classes should i phase 1 ?? i can only take two courses it seems .. since 2 courses make up 8 units. Is not enrolling for 10 units a prob ?

Your opinion/criticism/help would be highly appreciated.

I think you can only take M53 if you’ve either done Calculus 2 at a community college or you’ve received a 5 on the BC Calculus Exam. I suggest you try to sign up for Math 1A since those classes tend to fill up quickly.

I did my schooling under the A level (British) education system. It covers 1a 1b and part of 53. But i’m taking 1a and b again to have a stronger foundation. what happens in telebears now if i take 53?

^^ Nevermind. I found this on the telebear website.

So how hard is math 53? I’ve read some previous threads that says 53 doesn’t require that much detailed knowledge of math 1 a and b. Is this true?

I’ve taken the equivalent of M53 at a community college. In a very broad sense, M53 is like 1A with multiple variables. However, the same aspects still apply: differentiation, integration, etc. Every concept of M53 is looking at something in 3D, so it becomes very interesting, IMO. Given your situation, I think you’d be fine signing up for M53.

Stats and Astro might fill up quickly, so I’d start with those two. If you’re planning to do M53, I think you can wait until Phase 2. M53 won’t fill as quickly as the other classes, I think.

Usually the only way you can pass out of 1A/B to move on to 53 is by getting a 5 on AP Calc BC, taking the appropriate equivalents at a community college, or getting a prerequisite waiver from the instructor. Since you’re an international, your courses could pass you out of 1A/B, but it’s best to actually check with the instructor first. I would e-mail the instructor and explain your situation, since you probably still need that signed course waiver from him. Tele-BEARS will let you sign up for whatever, but your instructor may drop you from the course unless you’ve explicitly checked with him/her or an advisor first.
And I would sign up for the math courses in Phase II, they usually let in everyone by the end as long as you’re persistent.

ok… i know i might be sounding stupid here… but what’s an instructor? the professor or the GSI ? and how do i go about contacting him ? I emailed the math dept a week earlier and they suggested i start with 53 , but if i find myself overwhelmed i could drop down.

When a course has both professors and GSIs, the course instructor is your professor. But since you seem to have already been OK’d by the math department, starting off with 53 should be fine.
