Opinions?

Well, recently I was accepted to Seton Hall and went to another visit. I LOVED the campus and the overall feel of the school, it is about a hour away from where I live. However, for the last few months I have been soley focused on going to TCNJ which is about twenty minutes from my home and I also enjoy the campus. I have posted a thread asking about their individual biology programs, and while that is a factor I believe that is not as important if I am not happy at the school. Does anyone have any info that they can share about activities, fun things to do, or any info really on Seton Hall or TCNJ?

**I have not been accepted to TCNJ yet, but if the letter does come I want to be prepared. Needless to say if Im rejected the choice is made for me lol.

If I were you and it was affordable, I’d choose Seton Hall. SH has a strong tradition, good academics, fun sports to watch, etc. I think you’d have a more “full campus experience” at SH.

If your plan is to major in Bio to go Pre-med, then SH is totally fine!

What is your career plan?

My brother went to the SHU for two years then dropped out cause he didn’t like it. It has a very small campus feeling he said and there was not much to do. He was also in ROTC so he was not just sitting around, so yeah. However, he didn’t have the stats to go to a big, public school like PSU-UP or Rutgers so his fault also. I however have a friend and his brother that go to SHU and they both love it. The brother is also in the law school while working in Newark at a law firm. But as mom2collegekids said they do have strong tradition and a few fun sports to watch. They are doing quite well in basketball too right now. However, you have to take a religion class like every other catholic school :(

^^^

I’m not famliar with SH req’ts specifically, but usually Catholic schools require students to take one or two courses (not one every year) in some kind of theology area. The classes are not “Catholic classes” per se. They can be Judaic studies, Islamic studies, World religions, Old Testement studies, etc.

Edited to add…I just looked up SH’s theology req’t. They require one such Core class taken sophomore year.

CORE 2101 Christianity and Culture in Dialogue in the second year

Not too bad of a req’t. Certainly nothing that would pressure a non-Christian.

TCNJ is much more highly regarded in this region. It is considered to be the top public in NJ. Look at the middle 50% SAT scores - Seton Hall M-490-600, CR - 490-600, W- 500-600. TCNJ - M-590-690, CR- 560-660, W- 570-670.

TCNJ accepts 42% with 95% of freshmen returning.
Seton Hall accepts 73% with 85% of freshmen returning.

It is considered to be the top public in NJ.

I’m sure that Rutgers-NB, which is the state’s flagship public, would disagree with that.

:)

Rutgers itself may disagree, but general opinion around here is that TCNJ is the better school. TCNJ is more selective, has a higher percentage of freshmen returning and has higher middle 50% SATs for incoming freshmen. It would also depend on whether a student wants the large school experience with Rutgers at 28,000 or a smaller environment such as TCNJ at 6200. I have had many dealings with Rutgers and the bureaucracy can be tough.

I think it also depends what program people are applying for at Rutgers-NB compared to TCNJ. If it were Pre-Pharm. students at Rutgers vs TCNJ students, RU-NB would be more selective and way harder to get into. I’m from Jersey and even though I agree TCNJ is a great in-state school, I still must say Rutgers-NB is more better overall. TCNJ imho doesn’t have the “college feeling” like Rutgers does. It may be better in some areas in terms of academics but in terms of athletics and campus life Rutgers is way better.

My career goals consists of Bio/Pre Med. Yes, mom2college kids, I also believe SHU will give me a proper campus experience, I got the vibe just from visiting. And a religious class here or there definitely is not a big deal to me. However, I am faced with the same dilemma that kitty56 mentions, TCNJ is a much selective school, and for the past few months has been my number one, what Im trying to discern is if the fact I have been accepted to SHU and just recently visited clouding my judgement. Do any of you guys believe the campus life is something instilled in each university or is it what you make it, with it depending on the friends you make? In regards to Jimgotkp, I understand your point and I was also accepted to Rutgers-NB, but to be frank, I hated the campus and something about Rutgers didnt click with me. While I dont need “special” attention the thought of such large class sizes is something undesirable to me. However, everyone I know that attends RU speaks of the amazing parties, etc etc. While this is not a crucial selling point, I dont want to be sitting in my dorm every saturday night. Im trying to find the right combination of what makes me happy and whats the best for my future.

IMHO, campus life is affected by the friends you make. To be honest, many people wouldn’t do things on campus by themselves. You may say, “oh, it doesn’t even matter if I’m by myself” but many people are self-conscious especially midway into the semester if they are always doing things by themselves. If you have friends, you would be doing almost everything there is to do on-campus and around. It makes your stay at college a lot more fun and desirable, however without friends college is really a bummer. This is also coming from experience. I understand that Rutgers-NB didn’t click with you since I hated Rutgers also but it is one of my #1 choices cause of finances. I believe most parties at SHU are off-campus or in dorm. rooms. Since you’ve been there I’m sure you know it’s a gated school all around so yeah.

I agree completely. I am far from a party animal, but I think whatever college I choose will be enjoyable as long as I meet the people. And yeah I understand, Rutgers is a reasonable price, SHU wouldn’t be an option for me finance wise without the scholarship they offered me and hopefully a good amount of financial aide. And yes they did mention the gated campus which I guess makes sense. Thanks for your input you’ve been very helpful ! :)
