What if I let my Lit teacher write it?? Would you think that helps?? She thinks I shouldn't have a C, but she's like orthodox, so she won't change my grade(sigh...). Though she was willing to send in a letter showing my progress from a C to a B+/A-. Would that be of help?

DO NOT SEND THAT LETTER. It's obvious you're a smart kid and the class was hard. In addition, your good 1st semester grades show that you haven't been slacking off. A letter would be seen by some admissions counselors as an "excuse," (even if it really isn't) and it would not help for almost all admission counselors.

As for the ives, its almost a lottery, but your grades are definitely good enough for you to have a ticket to that "lottery."

I wish you the best of luck and congrats for all your hard work. It will pay off!

Even if the letter is from the teacher?? I mean like I improved drastically in the class, so would a letter help? Or just forget about it??

Bump!! Please give some more opinions on whether a letter is necessary. I'm giving my teachers envelopes tomorrow if they are.

i think that other than Harvard, standford, princeton you have a good shot at most of the other schools. a few of the other ones may be reach.

I don't see the point of the letter, if it's just going to say the class was hard. I note that you also got a 670 on CR part of the SAT, and a 3 on your AP English exam--this will suggest some weakness in English. I think it's a longshot for the top Ivies, but you will almost certainly get into some of the schools on your list (in addition to Rutgers).

that's so awesome that you're band spends 20 hours a week rehearsing but it kinda sounds like you're trying to improve your chances just based on those 20 hours...
my band spends 30 but it's not like that is like a crucial factor.

numerous marching band awards?
i don't necessarily think that makes you stand out as an individual. it's the whole band you know?
my band played at carnegie hall in New York, but it's not like i performed as a soloist.... it was our band as a whole.

Every drum major goes to a drum major "academy" or "camp".. whether it's their band director who sends them or their parents... but that's great that you're drum major, that definitely sets you apart.

just letting ya know sorry if i sound mean, but just calling it as i see it.

ooops, i misread.

but you won things individually?
that's really cool: )

Thanks. Yeah, quite a few individually, but our band won like 2nd at Nationals, so that should be pretty positive too.

Well, the letter's suppose to mention that the class is hard and that I improved a lot. At the beginning of the year, my teacher was telling me how I would get a 3. Now, she's like you'll get a 4 and in a month's time, you'll get a 5. So... yeah, she's going to mention improvement. Would that help mollify the C?

Some opinions?? I'll chance you back. =D
