Opportunities for Non-Theatre Majors at USC?

I'm going to be a USC freshman in the fall and while I'm ecstatic to be majoring in Screenwriting, I also looove performing and I don't want to stop acting (ever). So essentially what I'm asking is are there still going to be opportunities for me to audition for shows and what not at USC even though I'm not a theatre major? I know there are some USC students/parents here, so I'd really appreciate any info!

Yes, there are plenty of opportunities to audition for plays even if you are not a theatre major. Some plays are specific to the BFA students but many are open to all students. Have fun! It’s a great school and you will have many experiences available to you in performing and other areas as well.

Thanks, Babar! Anyone else care to share? What are some of the student run organizations? I know Slanderous Tongues but they’re more classical and I’d ideally like to do more modern stuff too. What kind of opportunities are there for non-majors?

There are a ton of ISPs (Independent Student Productions) every semester, and those are open to any student at USC. Well, at least any undergrad–I don’t know if the grad students can audition, I guess they could, but I don’t think any of them want to.

MTR, Musical Theatre Repertory, puts on 2-3 musicals a year. Last year, they did 25th Annual, A Little Night Music, and Edges. This year, they will be doing an all-girls cabaret and The Drowsy Chaperone.

Slanderous Tongues put on Much Ado About Nothing last spring.

Brand New Theatre (BNT), which is ironically the oldest student-run theatre group on campus, does a show each semester showcasing one-acts written, directed, and performed by students.

Women’s Theatre Organization is obviously women-centric. They do at least one show a semester. They do welcome males.

Productions that I can recall are:
Fall:
Tommy (funded by a grant from the TSA [Theatre Students’ Association, they give out a grant each semester for a student-directed play])
Our Town
Fool for Love
WTO’s four one-acts
25th Annual
BNT presents Filthy Animal

Spring:
a show that due to some kind of weird stipulation I don’t know if I’m allowed to say what it’s called but a contemporary drama with a small-to-medium sized cast?
Almost, Maine
9x9 (9 plays written by students, I think MFA Playwriting and others but I don’t really remember)
The Vagina Monologues (WTO)
Take Back the Night (WTO)
The Frost Project (Robert Frost’s poetry as a play?)
A Little Night Music
Edges
BNT presents Deranged
Much Ado About Nothing

I think Dog Sees God was also supposed to be put on this spring, but that didn’t happen for some reason.

I don’t know if there are more plays listed in the spring because there simply are more shows, or if it’s just that I remember them better since it was more recent.

Also, the mainstage musical in the spring is open to all undergrads at USC. This spring, it will be City of Angels.

There are numerous other opportunities in improv groups, student films, dance, poetry performances, opera (COUSC), a capella, etc.
