I applied to NYU, and earlier this month I received an e-mail that told me I was being considered for a program that less than 2% of applicants are considered for. It's called the Opportunities Program and I believe that it plays toward minorities, and destitute families. I just want to know if anyone has heard of this program or has been contacted by NYU that they are being considered for it as well.

Opportunity Program Home

1000 to 1250 SAT's sounds low for NYU...

how did u apply to this program? my parents' income is around 13,000 and i am a minority however i got a 1320 on my sat, would i qualify?

anyone?..............please this is important

13,000? wow, maybe you should consider attending a less expensive school. NYU is notorious for it's horrid financial aid, if that's the way you want to spend your college years.

They sent me an email as well. I havent gotten anymore information on it though but I am kind of excited that they considered me!

If you're being considered for this program, does that mean that al of you are in?

I have no idea! It would be great if that was the case!

sry to burst ur bubble dongkong1 but if u read the website of the opportunities program correctly then u should be aware of the eligibiity requirements. Thus, u do not fit the requirements of it.

I went to an interview, and I think I am basically in. No, you don't apply to this program, NYU just considers you for it when they go over your application. I am sure it's basically for students, whether impoverished or a minority, who they are interested in and don't have great SAT's.

how long did it take for them to notify u before completion of ur TAP application? did u receive the news from mail or email??

You went to the interview, how was it? How do you know that you're "in"?

To CSiu, I have actually just received my TAP application, and I havent completed it yet. To Kiwikimmi, In regards to my interview, in my opinion it went very well. My interviewer liked me a lot, and towards the end of the interview he told me that he would give me the best recommendation he could, but that it was ultimately up to the admissions board. He even gave me a number to call, so that I could find out if I was accepted before they mailed out official letters. Haha, and I don't know if I am really in yet its just confidence acting as encouragement.

ok...but that's really great though! I'm a bit wary if it all. Hopefully I do well too.

Yeah, good luck.

to earlygrad08,
my daughter received the same, but i'm not sure how to take it. she is a stellar student rank 4 in her class honors,AP vonlunteer work, internship, national honor society. does it mean she needs some kind of help or is it just because she is african american? is there any financial aid involved? Is she accepted or is acceptance to the program hinge on acceptance to the school?
help me understand. thanks

You know jmldouglas, honestly the first time I read the e-mail through I was insulted. As I researched more about the program I found it do be a very good thing. There are two separate programs within the Opportunity Programs which include the: Heop program which pertains to those who need a large amount of aid to help them pay for the school, and have okay SAT's, and the C-Step program which pertains to students who have okay SAT's, but the school is still interested in. All of these programs are geared toward getting students into the school who might not have the highest SAT's or the most money. The Opportunities Program is a great thing, NYU is a tier one school which is included in the category of being a "new ivy league," university. Anything that will help get a student into one of the top schools in America is a good thing.

Oh, and sorry for not specifying before. Your child has to go to the interview for the program or her acceptance to the school will be jeopardized. If she gets accepted to the program then she is accepted into the school.

thank you for the info. I was kind of insulted also, but i feel somewhat better about it. Will you be doing the 6 weeks summer program?
