Oppurtunities to fly as a mid?

Hello, a couple of contacts (current mids) at USNA have told me that mids with their pilot licenses are able to fly at some airport in or near Annapolis. This is ALL they told me, they don't know anything else about it. I'll have my license in a couple months, and was wondering if I would be able to fly on the weekends or whenever while at the Academy. Thanks for the help.

David - I heard that mids who want to pursue naval aviation are required to either get their license and/or continue to fly during their time at USNA. I also look forward to hearing a credible response. - Dan

I have a mid with his pilots license and have never hear of that. It may help with admissions... but a requirement for service selection has never been stated.

We went and looked at the available airports just prior to I-Day and ran into some upper class at one airport. They were encouraging however very realistic that during plebe year you will not get to fly much if at all. All my son is hoping for is to stay current, which pretty much means to go fly an hour or so every 90 days. The mids did say that by 2/c year your opportunity will be much greater, even to the point of being able to get your privates if you do not have it already. A major problem is with transportation out to the airport (taxi) and then there is also the problem with town liberty - only on Sat afternoon/evening, weekend duty assignments and the possibility of liberty being taken away at the last moment - so scheduling an airplane, let alone an instructor, becomes next to impossible.

Just be realistic in your expectations.

I personally don't know anything about this, but they do seem to have a flight club.

My son is a current plebe with his pilots license. He checked into flying and questioned whether he would be able to afford the time to fly based on his other responsibilities. Mids who choose aviation for their service assignment are not required to obtain their pilot's licenses while at the academy. The Navy will train you following graduation.

USNA FLIGHT TEAM

Currently disbanded due to lack of funding

I looked at the site I posted above and found this message. Looks like there isn't an official Flight Team right now. It's unfortunate, but I'm sure the Mids have enough other things keeping them busy. :(
