Hello all,
I am interested in electrical engineering, and these are the main sub-fields that I am interested in. My question is, which of these fields is expected to grow the most and provide the most job stability in the next 10-20 years. I know power systems with an emphasis on smart grid and green technology is supposed to be hot, I'm not sure how optics is, and I know that control systems is currently a very lucrative field, but I'm not sure how much it will grow. I appreciate any answers I can get. Thanks.

I came with both power systems and control system experience so I can tell u a bit on it.

For power system (assuming roles in protection, asset, design etc), there are not too many jobs available as one region probably only have 1 utility company. That being said, the pay and benefits for these jobs are really high and are really stable. I cannot say anything about generation side as i have never worked there. There are jobs that are not in utility companies (consultants etc) but the pay is horrible with long hours.

As for control systems, there are alot more jobs, though it is again split into two types. If you do design for control systems (ie scada) you will have some traveling and the jobs might not be too stable, but pay is ok. If you are in system operations, however, the pay is very good and it is one of the most stable job you could get. However, you might need to carry a phone 24/7 which is the reason that I left. If you are into this, make sure ur good in powerflow and programming also.
