OptimizerDad: Wash U Questions

My D (junior) has expressed preliminary interest in WUSTL based upon the science/math programs which they offer. I've noticed on your postings that your D is a recipient of a full ride scholarship at the university. Though my D has a very high class ranking and scores, I'm certain that there must be tremendous competition. Any information you could give on this would be appreciated ... i.e. the process (did they approach her or did she approach them, is a student an automatic scholarship candidate with application, etc.)
I've also read that some students are flown out to see the campus at the cost of the university, sometimes more than once. Is this ever offered prior to application to top potential candidates, or only to certain applicants at a significant point in the scholarship process?
Does an ED application factor into any of this?
Many thanks.

TwimMom:
Sorry, I'd missed your post till now.

WUSTL didn't send our daughter an invitation to apply for their merit scholarship - we had looked it up on their website. It may have been there as part of the 'How to Pay for your College Education' hard-copy they had sent. Filing for WUSTL's merit scholarship(s) is non-trivial, it requires a number of different forms to be filled out.

Our daughter didn't apply EA or ED, just RD. WUSTL didn't offer to fly her out to the campus until they notified her on Feb.20th that she was one of the finalists for the Moog. After this, she was flown out for three days of interviews/ meetings in early April - WUSTL paid for the whole thing. I believe there were 36 finalists spread across four scholarships offered by the College of Arts & Sciences. Of these, 12 got a full-tuition offer, and I think the rest got a half-tuition offer. The Dean called us at home two days after the visit to inform us that our daughter was one of the winners.

WUSTL had a 'Multi-Cultural Weekend', or similarly named event, for all minority students (not just URM) who had been accepted. I believe this was fully/almost free, but our daughter didn't go.

Many thanks, OptimizerDad, for the info.

sorry to resurrect this post, but i was wondering.

Do you need prior research knowledge to get this scholarship? I have none, and I'm not even sure what to write my paper on because of that. I'm not so sure if I stand a chance against all those other extremely well qualified competitors

Stardash:
Well, it would sure help if you had research experience, although I don't think WUSTL expects you to write a publishable paper by yourself :-). Our D had done research work in a lab at the Hines Hospital here in Chicago, for one summer + during the first half of senior year. I don't know if it is necessary, but every little bit helps.

Thanks a lot!
