Optimizing the two major choices at UT

With two major choices provided, I can think of two approaches

  • one "reach" major and one "safety" major
  • double your chances at UT by selecting two "match" majors

And have two questions:

  1. What happens if you don’t get either of your majors? Who decides you are a good candidate after all and let you pick from a list of what remains available at the time your application is scored?
  1. Is there a list anywhere of majors ordered by competitiveness?

A complication in the above is that I do not know what happens if your second major choice is in a different school. Some say it isn’t even considered because your application goes to the school of your first choice, and some say it matters.

Any helpful comments from anyone?

In my experience, UT does not consider the second major. The students I know that applied to CS/Eng and denied their first choice were not offered their second choice. They were either offered something totally unrelated or were told they could pick an open major at the end of the process.
