Hey! so I'm trying to register for some mandatory core classes at a local community college to take over the summer, so I can get them out of the way, and not have to take them come fall. I've looked on umd's website, and I really cant tell what courses all freshman must take. That being said can anyone tell me which courses are required for all freshman to take in order to graduate? and I was also thinking of adding a double major in the simth school, so what are the pre-reqs that I would need to add that double major? Thanks for the help.

This is the core page: [UM Testudo | Schedule Of Classes](http://www.sis.umd.edu/bin/soc?crs=core&term=201108)

You have to take an HA, an HL, and then either another HA, HL, or an HO. You have to take a science lab and a science non-lab. You have to take an SH and SB, and you have to take a Diversity (D) class which can easily be covered by taking, say, an HA (many classes fulfill something plus the Diversity requirement).

You’re the one whose the journalism major, right? We don’t need to take SH or SB, our major requirements fulfill those. Also, there’s going to be several classes you need to take in your first two years as a journalism major. For example, classes in ECON, COMM, PSYC/SOCY/orANTH, HIST, GVPT, and then there’s a thing with foreign language or math/computer science or a combo.

This student handbook is a couple years old but it contains more info on those class requirements: [Undergraduate Handbook | Philip Merrill College of Journalism](http://www.merrill.umd.edu/undergraduate/advising/student-handbook)

so I was thinking of taking either
- the equivalent of ENG 100
2.) the equivalent of Math 100
3.) and maybe an intro to psych class.

I took the ap enviro sci. and us gov and pol test, so hopefully I get credit for those classes too. Like I have said in other posts, I am looking to possibly double major, so I want to make sure I have enough credits going to make it plausable in four years.

haha, and yes i am the person with the journalism major. Are you a journalism major?^^^

Before you register for a Math class, you’ll want to know which course the math test that you take prior to orientation places you in. ENG100 or Psych would be great choices. Also, you might want to consider another science class to meet core requirements, or ECON…it’s not a walk in the park at UMD.

Yes I’m a journalism major…I don’t think there is a Math 100…you would want the equivalent of something at least as high as Math 110 anyway. At orientation last year we were told that most journalism majors take Math 111 (probability). So that’s what I took last semester. But if you double major in the business school you might need to take a higher math…I don’t know the business requirements though.

Also, you don’t have to take whatever the placement test places you in. I placed into the highest option, calculus, but there was no way I was taking that when I didn’t need to. Math 111 was really easy, by the way.
