I've been reading past posts about the optional answer and I've noticed that some people have not only been writing about hardships and special cases but also about why USC is their first choice, etc.
I want to mention one of the main reasons I want to attend USC (diversity) and that it is my first choice because these "tidbits" didn't really fit into the academic interests short answer. However, I also need to clarify a C I recieved freshman year (it only took a couple sentences). Did anybody write something in the "optional space" and Would it be okay to do both in this space?

I'd say go for it, Gabs. And good luck.

Thanks! :)
Anyone else?

I used the space to explain why my high school grades were so bad.. (75% out of 100%)

This is what the space is for. Discuss the C first, then move on quickly. I would not dwell on it at all, college offices tend to not worry about freshman grades too much if a strong upward trend is present after that. In fact, I think that it is a mistake not to use this space for SOMETHING, but make it meaningful.
