Optional Application Essay?

I'm applying to a variety of schools, but my first choice is Ohio University. I filled out the Ohio Advantage application and finally reached the "optional essay" portion. Does this essay strictly affect admission into the school, or could it influence other things such as scholarships? I've always considered it a necessity for more competitive schools, but I feel like I'm well qualified for OU (3.99 GPA, full schedule of AP courses, loads of extracurricular activities and leadership positions, etc.); so I'm just wondering if it would be advantageous or unnecessary!

If it’s your first choice, you should pursue it like it’s your first choice - leaving nothing to chance and doing everything possible to get in.

You’re this close to getting into your #1 choice and now you want to get lazy?
