Optional Artist Supplement- should I send it?

Duke's application includes an optional Artistic Supplement, and they bolded the instructions saying only those with "exceptional talent" should send in their works. Then, attach a 1 page typed resume and send it in.

I think I'm pretty talented in visual arts (mainly drawing and painting), but I've only taken a Draw/Paint I class in 9th grade. I was going to continue with it throughout my hs career, eventually taking HL IB Art but due to scheduling conflicts in soph, jun, and sr year I wasn't able to take Art. (Our school required mandatory classes just for the class of 2010) Currently, though I can't take IB Art SL (again, scheduling conflicts with AP Calculus), I'm taking AP Art History.

Due to this, I havn't produced many pieces, and most of them are in pencil/charcoal/oil pastel/watercolor. I don't have many good acrylic/oil pieces because painting's not included in the Draw and Paint I class curriculum.

Not taking art classes in 10-12 grade has also prevented me from having my works displayed, or submitted to any contests/winning any awards. Basically, my resume will pretty much suck.

I've won a $500 scholarship to attend an art camp at a community college, and I got to county level in the Reflections Art Contest (not something to be proud of, but it just shows how limited my artistic achievements are). I'm also a member of the VBS decorating committee at my church, and I volunteered in the Arts in Medicine department at Shands Hospital. My art was also going to be showcased at a local college in 10 grade, but because I didn't have an art class, my teacher couldn't reach me in time and it ended up not being submitted because she didn't have my permission/signature.

I'm just wondering if it's worth it to send in the optional artist supplement. Normally, with such a crappy resume, I wouldn't, but I want to minor in Visual Arts and my essays talk about my passion for both medicine and art. I think it'll seem weird if I talk about how important art is to me, and not have a supplement.
I just noticed how long this post was. I am SO sorry, but any advice would be appreciated!

Gah I’m having the same dilemma- since I’m in the orchestra I’ve never been able to do the usual art classes :frowning:
the Duke thing asked that we don’t send cartoon art, and I’m trying to figure out how my art is classified, if its cartoony or not…or maybe that just means no animations? dunno

I think, though, that if you have stuff ready and you’re thinking about an art minor, you should do it

Aw, woe to us! It sucks how limited hs scheduling can be. :frowning:
Hmmm I think they just mean cartoon as the standard cartoon and manga that doesn’t involve proportions or shading. I think if you have art that’s semi-realistic (ex: Final Fantasy) with awesome technique and style, it’d be fine to send that in.

Hm ok… I have some pieces and will work my butt off to make more, but I’m mainly worried about the resume.
