Could this form hurt an applicant?

Well, your art has to be good... it doesn't have to be PROFESSIONAL of course... I sent in some stuf from my art class and my favorite photos, but they weren't to die for. Remember, the form is optional - Duke just wants to see what other talents you have, they're not out there to hurt you.

The only way it could hurt you is if your resume is a lot better than your playing (e.g., you've been in all-state or all-eastern and your tape sounds like sh**...But otherwise it should help you out if you are an advanced visual or performance artist.

do you think it would be ok if i included 2 flute songs and a harp song as well?? (on one cd)

sorry harpingchic, i don't know... but i assume it would be ok. why don't you call admissions, or talk to a representative in your area?

do I need to send a form with my materials? can i just mail my art and writing? i see on the website that you're supposed to ask the school for a form, but it seems a little late now, and i cannot locate an online form. bahhhhh

that's the Supplementary Artistic Material Form (Part 5S). :)

thanks qubic :)

How good is the music department at Duke? Does anyone know? And are musical groups popular?

I have had an amazing experience with the music department. Because it isn't a conservatory, you will receive a lot of attention. The teachers are great (mine is outstanding) and the groups are generally excellent. I am in the Duke Symphony Orchestra and though we move very fast we have great material and perform very well. In addition the Wind Symphony is quite good and the Chorale is amazing. There are always amazing artists and groups such as the Moscow Philharmonic, Joshua Bell, Emerson String Quartet, et al and master classes to attend. No performances are more than $5 for students. For me the music department has been perfect!

thanks for those encouraging words! what instrument do you play, and did you send in a musical supplement with your application?

wow, that's great, incollege88! i want to ask you the same questions as harpingchic. oh, and also, what level player are you? i'm still trying to figure out how good you have to be for duke, especially the orchestra (i play clarinet, which is a pretty competitive instrument to begin with, but probably not as hard as violin.) thanks!
