Hello, I am planning to take Calculus at Indiana (I think its M118 or M119), so is it necessary to take the optional calculus exam. I took Calculus in high school, but I want to repeat Calculus at Indiana. Is there any benefit then for me to take the optional calculus exam? Thanks

If you are certain you want to take calculus at IU then there is no reason to take the optional calc placement exam. But if you want to keep your options open and you think there is any possibility you could place out of calculus by taking the exam then you should take it. Even if your score places you out of calc, I’m pretty sure you can still take calc if you want.

zman, M119 Calculus is all you need to meet Kelley Icore prerequisites. A lot of students regret taking M211 after they have tested into that class and were advised to take it instead of M119.

If you score high enough, the optional calculus exam will give you credit for MATH M211, so you would not have to take calculus at IU at all if you score high enough. If you are a Kelley student, MATH-M 211 fulfills the MATH-M 119 requirement. If you don’t score high enough, taking the optional calculus exam won’t force you into taking M211 if you want to take M119. So again, if you are certain you want to take calculus at IU, there is no need to take the optional exam. But this will be your only chance to get credit for calculus without having to actually take calculus at IU.
Oh wow, thanks guys. Im a Kelley da and I thought that the highest course I would be able to test out of was m119. I didn’t want to test out of the first calc class only to be placed into a higher calc class. I didn’t know I could test out of m211 too. Well, I don’t know if I can do it, but I will give it a try. Thanks a lot!
