Optional Essay an general advice

I am planning on applying early action to tulane, and I am fairly confident I will get in(2150 on SATs, 4.2 WGPA, have taken 11 AP classes, minority, etc) and I would really like to go there, but it is a safety school. I'm going to do the optional essay, but I am not sure what to write or how much I should put into it. Any advice or thoughts about anything would be appreciated. Thanks and good luck to you!

Let’s start with you saying you would really like to go there, but it is a safety school. Can you clarify? Usually students don’t describe their first choice school as a safety. Granted you have the stats do get in, but are you wanting to attend more selective schools if you get into them?

Its my third top choice, but it’s still a safety, if that makes sense. Its a safety that I would be perfectly happy attending, even more so than some of my reaches and targets. You get what I’m saying kind of?

I’d call it a likely, not a safety. But if you don’t show some passion in your essay, that can show through, so be careful.

** Any school with an admission rate in the 20’s is not a safety for anyone

OK, that does make it clearer. You have three schools that you would feel very good about attending, and Tulane is one of them. It also happens to be one you have a good shot at, if you can show them you really want to go. That is one of the keys at Tulane.

So to answer your original question, you have to show them why Tulane is one of your top choices. I would definitely put some thought into it. There is nothing wrong with being honest that there are a couple of other schools that also seem like good choices, in fact it would be bizarre, for a good student like yourself, if there weren’t. So focus on what it is about Tulane that uniquely attracts you. Why, if you got accepted to all three, you would still give it serious consideration, even if the other two are even more selective than Tulane, at least stats wise.

Your goal is to not only get accepted, but to get as much merit aid as possible. Make them want you, and make them want to lure you from these other schools. But they have to believe you when you say you would seriously consider it even if you got accepted to all three. Does that make sense?

That was really helpful, thank you so much!
