Optional essay

On the optional essay in the application, it says "show what you have created"

If you attempt to answer this questions, will it boost your chances for admission?

Does it have to be science-esque research? Could it be leaning more towards humanities (social studies type research?)

I guess so...

"I guess so" as in science-esque or "I guess so" as in humanities?

It doesn't have to be research. It has to be something you created. A computer program would qualify, as would a knockout mouse, but so would a painting, a novel, or a cake.

Answering that question by itself doesn't boost your chances of admission (and it is, in fact, optional). Answering that question in a unique, memorable way that showcases some aspect of your personality, of course, is a different story.

Awesome! Thanks again mollie :)

Oh one more thing, essays provide adcoms with more information about you (duh!). So if you're a good writer and think you can do a great job, GO FOR IT!

What if I write about an idea? Is it something that tells "Hey, that girl hasn't invented anything"? I was thinking of beginning with "I could tell you about the X research project, or about the club I started, or just about the photos I've taken, but I'd prefer telling you about my revolutionary idea". Is this a good beginning?

If it's an idea you came up with, then it's something you created.

Yes - I, for example, submitted an essay I had written for some other school... I mean, hey, I "created" it!

I submitted a short story I wrote and it worked.

But definetely don't just do it to do it. Don't decide "I'm going to do this optional essay" and then try to come up with a new idea at the time (unless you are doing this well in advance of the deadline).

DO: Submit something representative of your interests and creative ability.

DO NOT: Submit half-naked pictures of yourself with an attached message, "I CREATED SOMETHING IN YOUR PANTS, EH EH EH?"

In retrospect, I have no clue how I got into MIT...

lmao that's an awesome idea ^

lmao at Olo
