Optional Essay ?

I'm finishing up my application and I'm wondering about the 'optional essay'. This is what it says in case you aren't aware-

OPTIONAL ESSAY
Is there anything else you would like to share with us regarding your background or interests that you didn't have the opportunity to share elsewhere? Have you overcome exceptional difficulties or challenges? Have you participated in any programs or activities to help you prepare for college, such as Governor's School, Project Uplift, Gear-Up, AVID, Upward Bound, LEAD, or Summer Ventures?

(please limit your answer to approximately 250 words)

Do I do this? I know some schools' optional essay really means required, but I haven't really heard any mention of this. Thank you for your time.

Oh and will applying Early Action improve my chances any?

A no brainer - definitely do the optional essay. My impression is that UNC wants students who really want to be there - taking the time to do the optional essay, among other things, will show your interest and committment. Good luck!

I originally had the same thought, but then realized that the essay is specific to backgrounds that may include hardship, overcoming difficult circumstances, etc. That is why they elaborate on the initial prompt.

No. UNC has two deadlines - Nov. 1, and Jan 18. Your chances won’t improve if you apply during the first deadline, but showing your fist semester grades could help slightly if you apply during the second deadline.
