Hey I've been working on my W&M application and I've come to the supplement. I saw that the only essay is an optional essay. I feel my Common Application essay (which has already been submitted to other schools and is thus locked) adresses this prompt adequately already.
Would it be taken badly if I didn't write an optional essay? In other words, will the admissions department think I am uninterested in W&M if I don't take the time to write the optional essay?

If they give you an “optional” option, it is simply another chance to help you distinguish yourself from so many smart, creative applicants. They probably won’t think you are uninterested, but the essay can only help you. W&M also accepts objects, videos, or artwork as an alternative to the optional essay. Be creative! You don’t have to write another essay if you don’t want to, but the submission is a great opportuntity to be creative and express yourself.

All of our optional components are truly optional. We do not disadvantage or think less of any applicant who does not complete optional components. As Skydancer017 stated, the optional submission (which can be but does not have to be an essay) is simply another opportunity for applicants to express themselves in a manner of their choosing and to let the Committee know more about them.
