okay i know everyone says that optional essays are really optional, but i feel like im being skimpy on my application if i dont do one. So is it true you should only do them if the prompt jumps out at you?

In my opinion, I wouldn't purposefully NOT do them. An application is the first impression you'll be giving college admissions officers. Any chance for them to get to know you better, or that gives you the opportunity to shine is one you should take advantage of. However, it's entirely up to you in the end!

If you have the time to write good essays, I think writing them would give you a leg up over those who do not.

Agreed. Take the chance to tell them as much about you as possible, including in your essays. It can only help you.
