optional part (using paper to create ...)

so i'm thinking about doing the use an 8.5x11 in sheet of paper to create something. except would it be ok if i glued some pictures on to the paper? would that be defeating the whole purpose of only using an 8.5 x 11 in paper? or would it be ok. cuz i'm gonna be designing something, but some extra pictures are necessary :S
does anyone have any idea?

my understanding is you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want to a 8.5x11 sheet of paper. I don't see how gluing pictures on would defeat the purpose.

"Whatever the hell you want," while not the words I would employ, is a startlingly accurate interpretation of that question.

I have to say.. the thing my son LOVED about his visit to Tufts was the admission guy's little "speech" about the essays. Truly classic. And yes, while not the words I'd probably employ either, "whatever the hell you want" was the essence.

Do you remember anything about this admissions guy speech, appearance, or name?

I'd love to pass on the kudos!

so for this optional essay if I was to do the paper thing how do I send it in? can I email a scanned image? or do I have to mail it? how does it work?

i think you have to send it in.

do you think it's better to write another essay for the optional part?

I chose to do something with photography because photography is one of my biggest passions, but I didn't really have a place to talk about it.

Plus... I had already submitted so many examples of my writing I figured that they had gotten a clear view of it.

Was that a good choice, or is opting for something non-written seem like the easy way out to the admissions office?

Well, the entire thing is optional, so I think doing anything for it can be seen as going beyond their expectations. Your reasoning is fine as well.

Then it would be appropriate for me to use both sides of the paper? I'm putting an illustration/drawing/diagram on the front, but I think it would be helpful/revealing if I explained some of my choices; I'd like to do that with a mini "essay" on the back.

^^i was wondering about this as well

Sounds good! You can do basically whatever you want. If you choose to explain what you've done, do your level best to keep your 'mini-essay' mini, but I had a couple of explanations sent with the 8x11s that I found wildly helpful.

Do we just send our paper supplements to the address list

Based on collegeboard this is how I would be inclined to address my envelope:

"Admission Office
Tufts University
Bendetson Hall
Medford, MA 02155"

If I send it to that address will it end up in the right place?

i was going to draw a fashion collage on the piece of paper and scan it online, but is that deemed inappropriate? like i honestly was not thinking of sending it in..

BGapplicant: replace "Admission Office" with "Department of Undergraduate Admission", and that is the address listed on the Tufts website.

Wow.. missed AdmissionDan's inquiry into who gave the presentation when Son and I visited the school. All I can tell you is he was wildly funny (and probably could do stand up on the admissions process if not anything else). And the best advice and thing I've tried to credit him with for the past two years regarding essays was (and I am certainly paraphrasing and not doing the humor justice since most of that is in the delivery):

Don't tell me about your grandmother and her trip over on the boat and how she overcame a bunch of crap. I'm sure she's wonderful, but it's not grandma applying for admission. And while going to Africa is a wonderful experience, don't sit around the fire singing Kumbaya and writing your essay on a direct DSL line to the admissions office. It's been done."

Very funny guy. And based on some of your entries on this board, I would venture to wager it could have been you. So kudos to you. It was one of only two or MAYBE three that didn't seem like it should have been over when it was.

Should we write about 4, 5 or even 7 optional essays and send all of them?

Modadunn, I think I heard the SAME quote at a Tufts Presentation this September! haha

I'm pretty sure one is enough. Much more than that is pushing it, anyways, as you don't want to **** off the person reading your app by sending too much stuff.

Modadunn I think I had the same guy, i found him sometimes annoying, but it was surely different from all the other information sessions I went to. I also did BC, BU and Harvard and he was the only to not go into specifics about test scores and crap.

It was sort of a relief.
