Optional Recommendation?

I had some questions regarding Duke's optional rec.

First, did most of you submit one? Who did you have write it?

I'm thinking about sending in one a friend wrote for me. However, I'm not really sure how much worth there is sending it from a friend, considering it's nothing more than a personality review.

But if I do have him send it, what informaton should be on it. Like how will they be able to match his rec to my application?

I had my band teacher do mine. If you put your full name and social security number on it, they should be fine matching it.

it won't make or break an application, but it'll help with the overall picture. they just want the reading to be more personalized

During the '09 convocation, Guttentag read a recommendation from a young kid about his babysitter. Apparently it made a really big impression on the adcoms. :p

Some places like Dartmouth and Davidson specifically ask for peer recs. Send it in.

I sent one in from my boss. It fit in with my demonstrated interest in business/economics (I worked at the local branch of an i-bank). I don't know that sending one in from a friend will help that much, but it certainly couldn't hurt. To be honest I don't know that my optional rec really mattered at all, but you never know. :)
