Options for students who are in U.S. illegally

Can you attend college in the U.S. if you are here illegally?

I recently met a lovely young woman who is a student at a local public high school in my city. She will be a junior next year, is an above average student and is a member of the H.S. ROTC. Her goal is to attend college and her major is undecided. She is from Mexico, speaks fluent Spanish and English and has been in the U.S. for over 6 years. Recently we began discussing all the steps necessary to apply to college but I am unsure how to help her because I believe she is most likely in the U.S. illegally. She lives with her mother who works full time cleaning houses.

Is it possible to apply to colleges if you are not here legally? How do you apply with out a SS number and/or a green card? Can you even take a SAT or ACT without a SS #? I just need information, not trying to start a debate on illegal immigration.

This website on the College Board might be of help: [Advising Undocumented Students](Advising Undocumented Students – Counselors | College Board)

Thanks M’s Mom. This is a great link and I appreciate your help.
