I'm from Florida and my parents are FORCING me to apply in-state. I said I'd apply to New College but I really dislike the school. However, I want something small. Which rules out any of the state schools otherwise. I know many kids who would otherwise be private bound tend to really enjoy state school honors programs. But, despite having a GPA to get into them at most schools, my SAT/ACT scores do not qualify me. I don't know what to do. Especially because I'm convinced that my parents will force me to go because of money and I'm scared that my degree will mean nothing outside of Florida and that, also, I won't get the kind of college experience that I want (which is essentially, the LAC experience).

On a somewhat related note, even if I'm top 5% of my class, if I purposely mess up the application for the school, will I get rejected? I'm kind of considering it, so that they can't make me go.

Wouldn't attend a university in Florida, but I'm sure attending one of their state schools will still mean as any other college degree outside of the state.

They're willing to consider privates but are more into state schools. In addition, I think it's ridiculous to pay that much for an education in a state I detest for the same price as the school out-of-state. In addition, our in-state privates aren't that good (except for UMiami, which I refuse to consider for many reasons).

I really don't know what to do, because I can't get into any of the school's honors programs (except for maybe like...UNF and, seriously, NO ONE wants to go there) and I missed the deadline for UF, which is the only school I'd consider without honors.

Honestly, I never heard of Eckerd until someone I knew decided to go there. So...I don't know what that says about the school, but yeah, not well known. As for UMiami, it's very close to home and I'm not a fan of the area.

I agree with heyalb, you need to talk to your parents, share everything you did here, and hope that they'll listen. If you treat them (and yourself) like an adult, they'll return the favor.
Good luck trying to convince them!

I have tried to talk with them. They just end up yelling and saying that I'm so selfish and I ruined everything by missing deadlines and stuff. In reality, they didn't object to my not applying in-state until after deadlines passed. But...yeah, I don't know what to do. Especially because I legitimately hate every school in the state of Florida.
