To fulfill my language requirement, I'm going to continue studying Spanish (the language I took in high school). I already took the online written part of the placement exam, but I know that during orienation week, we are supposed to take the oral part of the exam. I guess I'm wondering what to expect- how long is the exam? Is it a one on one test? What can I do to prepare for it? Was it, in your opinion, very difficult? I want to try to get out of at least one quarter of Spanish at Stanford. Anybody who has gone through the oral placement, your advice and experience is welcome!

I second this question

i third this question, but i haven’t even taken the online test yet…mine isn’t open until the 8th or 9th of august

how long is the exam?
Not too long. I don’t remember though. Maybe like 30 minutes to an hour?

Is it a one on one test?
No. You’ll be in an auditorium with hundreds of other students and a tape recorder. Sit next to smart students and you can pick up on good things to say.

What can I do to prepare for it?
Have a good vocabulary. Be proficient in things you’d generally talk, not write, about (like bargaining for a shirt, or giving directions, or ordering a meal, etc.). You probably have some time now to read a few books in Spanish. I’m gonna read one when I get home too, even though I don’t have a placement test to do. Also make sure to think in spanish. that always helped me before oral exams.

Was it, in your opinion, very difficult?
Eh, it wasn’t easy, but I somehow got placed into 5th quarter spanish. That was a shocker. I started freshman year in HS, did two years after that, got Bs in class, and hated it, but I guess I learned a few things.

No se la frase “good luck” en espanol, pero si yo lo sepa, te deria. (Actualmente acabo de visitar Traducir de Google. Buena Suerte :))

Find someone who speaks Spanish to talk with. Shouldn’t be hard to find in CA.
