Is there any speech/ oratorical contests for high school student besides that American Legion?

anyone? 10char

I don’t know of any other contests besides American Legion and I couldn’t find any others on Google. Maybe just local contests?

I happened to be gathering some toast masters information when this thread popped up on Google :)

As a former high school student who enjoyed speech contests I can let you know of the big 3.

American Legion Oratorical Competition with 3 levels of competition and usually a final scholarship of 25,000. (Be wary of your audience here. A more conservative approach works best.)

The National Management Association Speech Contest. This contest is held by local chapters for the NMA. The chapters are usually associate with companies that produce products for the military. i.e. Boeing This competition has 4 levels of competition and varying prizes. The final prize is now $4,000 cash compared to the previous $10,000 bond. If you make it that far, however, you would have most likely won another $1,800 along the way. They also provide lots of free stuff and conventions in really nice areas (This competition varies on being Liberal/Conservative. It depends on the area the contest is in. Judges are almost always local business managers who know nothing about speaking. I went from a National championship one year to losing in Utah the next. The speech I lost to was a worse speech but it was on Reagen’s trickle down economics Good Hunting. )

The Voice of Democracy audio essay contest. This is not a speech contest per say, but it is very similar. The contest consists of you reading your essay in a speech format that is recorded in some particular fashion. It is administered by the VFW/Lions club and can be found in almost any city of any size. Its scholarships amount to over 3 million dollars a year. Final award is now $30,000 I believe.

***If you are interested in these competitions I also suggest the American Legion Boys and Girls state programs. There are a number of scholarships that can be garnered from this program which is available to any high school Juniors. The American Legion Boys/Girls Nation program, which is the program above Boys/Girls state, is the epitome of all high school extra curricular programs. Most Ivy leagues and other institutions such as the Claremont Colleges have a question on their application asking if you attended anyone of these programs. Only two students from every state are allowed to attended the National Program.

If you have any questions let me know :)

How do I join that American state program?
