Is Hopkins Symphony Orchestra the only orchestra at JHU?
And is it for undergrad AND grad students?
And also, is it including Peabody students?

What other musical opportunities are available for wind players?

I have been wondering the same, except I am a string player. Are there chamber groups, larger orchestras for students not involved in music majors, etc…?

The HSO is composed entirely (as far as I know) of Homewood students (Arts and Sciences, and Engineering students, not music students). Music students at the Peabody Conservatory have two (or maybe more?) orchestras - the Peabody Concert Orchestra and the Peabody Symphony Orchestra. It’s possible for Hopkins (Homewood) undergraduates to audition for and join the Peabody orchestras - you have to meet the same standards as Peabody music majors would.

That’s all I know about music, but I’m sure other will have more information.

I believe that Tanman is correct except that I think the HSO comprises more than just students, i.e., any Hopkins’ afflilate (faculty, staff, etc.)

One of my friends is a violinist who takes lessons at Peabody for her own enrichment. Many students do dual degree programs with peabody and jhu, but I would think that’s pretty hard but it can be done!

Definitely a lot of music opportunities at Hopkins and over a Peabody. I suggest going by the tables at the student activities fair either as an admitted student or freshman fall!
