Orchestra in high school?

I was wondering if I should continue orchestra in high school. I'm in ninth grade right now and I love orchestra and playing the viola. I've been playing for 5 years. I've heard that orchestra looks good on a college application, but I also want to pursue other electives, and orchestra is taking up that spot. I don't particularly like my teacher; I think he is under-qualified for the job, so I don't think I'm getting an education from him. I was thinking about leaving school orchestra but continuing in a local prestigious youth symphony. Many if not all of my friends are in orchestra and I feel like I would miss out. The orchestra goes to Disney World in Junior Year and I will miss that opportunity. Any thoughts or suggestions on what I should do?

The only thing I would consider is if taking a different elective would mean not taking as advanced courses and showing as much commitment since you already have experience in orchestra. Otherwise, I don’t see a reason not to pick whichever one you would have more fun with.

Also bear in mind that many youth symphonies require participation in school groups, so you might want to check that out before cutting ties with the school orchestra, if you decide to do so.
