Trying to figure out this whole ordering textbooks thru a variety of avenues. I know of half.com. Any others I should be aware of? Also, what do you do about CD's being with books or these blasted code things? Seems as though most of D's books come with codes, CD's or, as an example, mypsychlab access code package, which means you can't order from anywhere but the bookstore.

Anyone understand the ins and outs of online ordering from book sites?

We have had very good luck getting books off Half.com, Amazon, Ebay, Alibris, others. I go to Froogle.com and put in the ISBN number and all sorts of bookseller sites come up. Some are consolidated selling sites you can just look for the best price.

As far as the codes go, it seems like you can always buy just the code from the site such as MyITlab, Myaccountinglab, etc. It’s usually about $45, but you can save tons versus buying the whole bundle at the bookstore.

Remember the ISBN for the bundle is going to be different from the book sold individually. If you call the bookstore and ask for the ISBN just for the book, they should tell you. I’ve even figured it out my self by just sleuthing on the net. As long as you have the right title, name, edition, etc, you should be able to get it.

The neat thing about the codes is some are good for a whole year. So for example my D had Financial Acctg in the summer and needed the online access. So the code will be good when she takes Managerial Acctg in the Fall. That is if you are fortunate enough for the consecutive classes to have the same online package.

The only thing about the booksites on the net is there are a lot of international versions out there for much less. They are basically the same, but harder to resell if that is your goal.

We ended up with an Instructor Edition for one class for D, and it has been fine. Don’t know how selling it will be.

^^^
Thank you! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. We haven’t used anything but the bookstore yet because she was deferring her costs from her financial aid, and that seemed to work great first semester. Books really didn’t cost that much. But last semester was much worse and ate up more of her FA so we thought we’d try the other route. I’m assuming that you don’t want to get a book through one of these places if there’s any chance you might drop the class because they probably don’t take returns, right? Also, how far out do you need to order to get them in a timely manner? Can you wait 'til you get to class and really determine if you need all of the required stuff for class? And, lastly (LOL), how have you found ordering from some of these folks … do you really get the book in the condition it’s supposed to be in? Or do you find you get much less than you expected?

It works like a charm.

Zebes, we always get the books way before the semester starts. Already have everything for Fall. I have only been disappointed once. It was on Ebay and the listing was under the ISBN for the student edition, but he sent the instructor edition, so it was misrepresented. Once I disputed it with Paypal, he agreed to my request of refunding me $20. I paid $70 and that was a lot less than others were selling for. I had determined the contents were the same, so I didn’t care to return it.

Some do allow returns, but shipping back will be on your dime so I’ve never gone that route. I always make sure the description says no writing or highlighting and like new. D doesn’t want anything that looks used. I’ve never been disappointed with the books I’ve bought. Just look for very good and like new.

We’ve never waited for class to start to see if book is needed. D always wants the books. If she doesn’t use it, it’s just in that much better condition to sell at the end of the semester.

I’ve never had a slow sender. Usually the books will come in 7-10 days depending on where they come from because it’s normally media mail.
