-1 teacher will write a probably very good rec on my english skills
-guidance counselor and i are tight friends
-probably get anothe rec from someone if i think its necessary/relevant

essays should hopefully be pretty solid since writing is what i do

Not a chance. A 2270 SAT and 3.8 GPA may look nice, but it really doesn’t cut it these days. Your leadership is a cute little add-on, but honestly, it’s not enough. Ordinary people like you are best suited for state schools.

really?
if those are your real scores, you’ll probably get into Brown.
Columbia really likes individuality (especially in terms of unique ethnic background) so that might be a challenge.
Those are both great schools and I think you have a good chance.
I wish I had your ECs…

you’re good enough, but it’s all a crapshoot. definitely not as bad of a shot as sirensong suggests.

sirensong, how can you possibly substantiate such a claim
how can you absolutely make that assertion?

2270 is in the columbia ball park and I think my role in the school/community is beyond “cute” as I have organized over 100 people to be involved in my community service project
ive had jobs, internships, volunteer work, and have been a student ambassador
im not sure how you consider those to be so nominal

Brown14, you do have a good shot at those schools but your leadership positions are average compared to other people applying for those schools.

I will concede that superficially they seem mediocre but one of my letters of rec from my Econ teacher/deca advisor will attest to my leadership capabilities and how ive elevated the club to unprecedented levels

I don’t think its about being president about everything//i think I was passionate about DECA and made a difference. im actualyl editor for 3 school newspapers now

btw after this year, my gpa should be 3.83-4 ish because i have like a 3.9 this year

He’s being facetious.

To get into the Ivy League, I’d develop a sense of humour.

I would say you have a good chance (emphasis on “chance”). I would apply but realize that it won’t be very likely.

how did you get those journalism awards?
i would REALLY like to know

Brown14 seems pretty pompous given his only good score is in SAT Writing, which most colleges don’t even care about.

I sorta figured/hoped he was joking. I guess after being on this site for a while I’ve realized there are a lot of @holes/arrogant jerks so I just assumed the worst.

ironically, im going to be interning at The Onion over the summer.

Look, im just posting my info for a chance thread, not a character critique
Are my chances that low at these two schools??

No, they’re not low. You don’t need a 2350 to get in. Like everyone says, it really is a crapshoot. It depends on what needs they’re looking for the day they look over your app. On one day, you might have a 90% chance. On another day, it could be higher or much lower. One thing I’m sure of is that you have a sold shot.

On another note, interning at the Onion sounds like the sweetest job. Hook me up?

I think it’s hilarious that people post chance threads and then get so annoyed when someone says probably not. Not just in this thread, I see it all over the place. It’s like these people seek constant re-assurance and approval and can’t accept a different viewpoint.

Wow! You worked really hard. I think your extra curriculars will be very impressive. Hm… although I’m just a freshman, I already can tell that their admissions are scary (did you look at their site?), since so many Salutatorian and Valedictorians were accepted. 11% were from schools that do not provide class rank, I guess you have a chance.

For the best information on getting in, you should contact an actual Brown Uni. student to have direct, reliable info on your chances. If they say you probably won’t, I think they’ll also contribute some suggestions about their second choices and some word of advice.

Good luck! :-)

Lol, it’s humorous to see how long it takes people to catch onto sarcasm. Anyway, you have 3 national awards, 8 regional awards, and 4 state awards, in addition to hundreds of hours of volunteering, several leadership positions, and SATs & grades that are inside the mid 50% range. Do you really need us to tell you that you have a good chance? If the answer is yes, then here it is:

You have a good chance.

I posted this thread because my parents told me they thought they would be wasting 140 dollars on apps because they think I have a small chance. my college counselor person at school thought these were wayy out of my reach so I wanted to ask the general community for input

Don’t listen to your parents about the money… tell them it’s an investment, and they’ll get solid dividends when you’re making six figures due to your awesome college education.

You’ve got a great shot. Since I’m assuming you can write, make sure you emphasize your cool internship/ journalism awards and other writing based activities in your college essays. You’ll be fine.

Alright, thanks guys [and gals!]. hopefully it works out.

i have to pick between columbia or brown ED…idk which one to choose
