Oregon State University, Online CS DEGREE

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to know if anyone had any information about this program. I already have a Bachelor’s in Neuroscience however I realized that I want to go a different route. I am concerned because this program is online as well as the fact that it is relatively new. Does anyone know how reputable this university is and if this would be a worth while investment? I don’t have a lot of money so I am trying to be cautious with my decisions. Thank you for any replies.

I am a second generation OSU grad and my dad was a professor there for 40 years. I would say that the faculty traditionally were expected to work hard and perform well. As an alum I know they are extremely proud of their ecampus. I was told that they feel strongly that many people around the world could benefit from their course offerings to provide needed expertise and education. Being a land grant university they take seriously their mission of improving people’s lives through research, technology and science.

We looked into their online chemistry for my daughter when she was in high school. I spoke with the professor, he was very helpful and encouraging. After finishing the online part, you travel there for a weekend to do the labs over a few days so you get the full chemistry experience. (about a five hour drive for us, so doable) I was impressed by the creativity to develop a course with such attention to detail) The reviews were excellent for this course. (she decided to stay home and enrolled in the local CC instead so we never tried it) It seemed the course was well planned and you learned the same information as if you were in residence.

You can call them and talk to them about your concerns. The E Campus is separate and they have their own staff.
My children have done a lot of online courses as they were homeschooled for many years. . They mentioned that more and more in residence courses are actually becoming hybrids anyway, in that the lectures or homework are done by video or online homework grading etc. They said they learned early how to manage independently to get the work done. My older daughter just finished her Masters in Accounting online while she was working FT and deployed a few times, also changing locations-- often made the Online Masters the best way to go. She is now looking into a second Masters online because she enjoys learning. Originally she tried to find an in residence Masters, but she said to get the exact program you really want, sometimes online is the only way to go.

My younger daughter is quite interested in CS also, if she isn’t admitted to the local University in the department she is planning on pursuing an online CS degree of some kind. . Another good one is U of Illinois online you don’t have to pay out of state tuition. I spoke with the department and it sounds like the people are quite nice and very helpful. U of I is her back up plan. She is also interested in an MS in CS if she can’t get a BS, she mentioned that Georgia Tech is starting a new low cost MS in CS but she said it is going to be very competitive to get in. She said there is a lot of prereqs you would need to take in order to enroll in an MS program if you don’t have an undergrad degree in CS. (It’s difficult to get into the one here) She is also pursuing a physics, math and perhaps another engineering degree in addition to applying for CS, They might want her to graduate though as she had senior standing as an 18 year old. If they make her graduate and leave, then she wants to start her MS in CS in some online program. (you might think of that also) Good luck! We’ll check into CS at OSU now! HTH
