Oregon State University?

Anyone go here or live near it?

I just got my acceptance letter today, which makes it three for three (San Francisco State and UMontana).

Oregon State was actually my second choice so I was estatic when I saw the envelope that said "Congrats!"

What is the community like? The surrounding areas? I hear that this is a good place for the zoology program I am going to go into, so thats a plus.

Nice small city and attractive campus. Only an hour from Portland and the Coast so plenty of getaway potential. Eugene is only about half an hour to the south. Good solid school in sciences and engineering.

Since I live in Eugene, I can second what barrons says. Corvallis is smaller than Eugene, the "other" major college town in Oregon, and perhaps a bit "sleepier." But there are movies, and restaurants, and shopping, as short drives to skiing and the ocean.

Cool. So Corvallis is a sleepy town? What about Eugene, is that a busy place? I am really into like city life and the busyness, and its frustrating because I also love OSU, so I'm also looking at how far it is from a city. WHat is the social life like at the college, and in Eugene? Are there clubs and things like that???

Eugene is larger and more active but hardly swinging compared to really large college towns like Ann Arbor and madison. Perfectly fine place to spend 4 years--especially if you like nature and hiking etc.
I go down to Eugene for weekends twice a year to get a little of that old Madison college town funky vibe.

I live in Portland, and I have visited OSU. It is a pretty nice campus, and it is located in almost a rural area. Basically, Corvallis only survives because of the college students. Although it has a large campus, it can be boring because it is like 2 hours from Portland.

barrons, from reading your posts, it is obvious you have visited a lot of college campuses. Are there any nice college towns like Ann Arbor and Madison, but with good weather?

Davis, maybe.

Chapel Hill

So what city would you say Eugene is most like? Does it have a good nightlife, like clubs and restaurants and stuff?

Madison and AA with better weather? Chapel Hill, Austin, Athens GA, Boulder, Lexington KY, C'Ville , Asheville NC are all decent to very good. Some are larger and some smaller but all still have a college town feel--at least near campus.

Eugene is most like Boulder. Not as lively as Madison or Ann Arbor but adequate live music scene and clubs. Most are away from campus about a mile so that hurts a little. You don't get the concentration of students cruising the streets at night.

barrons, true for the most part, but Taylor's and Rennie's are right on campus. There is also a gay club within walking distance of campus. The other clubs are downtown, a mile or two away.

I musta missed the gay club--not that there is anything wrong with that. I would add a great breakfast joint , Starbucks, and several good restaurants are near campus.

A mile isn't that long. Does Eugene feel like a city? Or just a lively town?

It is when you are half drunk and it's raining. This is in contrast to Madison and Ann Arbor where the campus abuts the downtown. Actually closer to two miles to most dorms as they are on the far side of campus.
I'd say lively town/small small city. To me Nashville and Charlotte are small cities but they are much larger than Eugene. The tallest buildings are maybe 10 stories and there are only a couple of those. Basically it's a good college town--some never leave as the COL is pretty low for the west coast.

I hope I am able to visit in March, I really want to go here for the school because I have heard good things about the biology department, but I also wanted like a busy place or a city to have fun in and just hang out at nights and on the weekends. Thats why I am also considering San Francisco State because it is so close to a big city, but I am more interested in the OSU campus more so than the SFSU campus. UGHHHHHHHh so much to think about in the coming months, and I have only gotten 3 acceptances so far! (If I get into UW then everything else is dropped, I'm going there! But I doubt I will get accepted).

Just to be clear OSU is in Corvallis which definitely is a small college town. Eugene is the University of Oregon--hated rival--and at least twice the size of Corvallis.

Yeah I know but it is not that far from Corvallis.

barrons, if you know where the old McDonalds was, that is now the gay bar.

I would agree that Eugene is a large town, very small city. We have jet service, which is a big requirement for me.

Platinumtlc - ARe you planning on having a car when you come out west? Getting from Corvallis to Eugene will require a car as there's not much in the way of public transportation between the two.
