For those of you who have taken an organic chem class in highschool, how challenging did you think it was? I understand this varies from school to school, but I would appreciate any info on the relative difficulty of the class.
I'm thinking of taking it next year, but the class seems terribly hard (avg. grade of 40% in the class :O)

I haven't taken organic chem, but from what I've heard about it (my grandmother is a chemistry professor; I have also talked to a couple of students who have taken it), it's not that difficult. "Not that difficult" in the sense that there is a balance between 1) the concepts you have to understand (which are relatively easy) and 2) the number of things you have to memorize (which can be hard, depending on your abilties).

Our school doesn't have a specifc organic chem class, but it's one of the units taught in Regents/AP Chem, and AP Bio (maybe even Regents LE?). The AP CHem teacher at our school majored in organic chem, and he tends to focus on it more than others. Personally, I think it's more memorization than anything.

I echo Lobgent in that Organic Chem's potentially hardest aspect is memorization of nomenclature rules. Otherwise, it really is a piece of cake. So if you've got a good memory, go for it, but if you don't, still consider doing it but count on summoning forth a little extra effort in order to succeed in the class. Don't limit yourself by averages... go for that 41%! :)

Ew, organic chem.
I took it as a component of IB Chem SL...and it slaughtered me. But then again, I am not a science type at all.

Organic is really easy if you have a really good memory. Otherwise, have fun with the nomenclature! (complete sarcasm combined with an absolute hatred for any ester, poly or otherwise...)

Nomenclature is just the elementary part of O-chem. It gets a lot tougher and has been the bane of my existence for the past 2 years. Don't take it. It's just not worth the trouble.
