Organic Chemistry Advice

Hey,

I have two options for taking o-chem and was wondering if some of you that have already had o-chem could give me some advice based on experience. Here are the options: take 1st semester o-chem fall of sophomore year and second semester during spring of senior year, or take the sequence senior year (1st semester o-chem fall of senior year, second semester o-chem spring of senior year).

Also, I was wondering what some of you thought about taking a class (like physics or o-chem) over a summer during college. I feel like the summer should be used for research and internship opportunities, but I guess if those were to be done during semesters after college they would also use up time that could be spent interning, etc. I guess what I'm wondering is what your opinions are on using summers vs. semesters after college to take o-chem or physics requirements.

Thanks!

Oh, I just thought of a good idea that involves doing research/helping a professor with research while taking o-chem or physics at a university over the summer (that might pay for some of the class bills, too). In your experience, does this sound feasible-- both with the amt. of work a summer course is and would any professor be willing to do such a thing?

If anyone has any insight, I'd be greatly appreciative!

why can't you take the courses in sequence until senior year?

I'll be going away during the Spring of my junior year, and I'm a sophomore who just finished gen chem this fall-- my college doesn't offer o-chem 1 during the spring semester.

And I was thinking about the work with a professor/take a class idea... that's stupid, please disregard it, heh.

I don't know if it is "good" or not, but son had orgo I second semester freshman year. He should have had orgo II, fall soph year, but due to illness could not take the class. It will not be offered again until the next fall unless he takes it in summer--so as of now that is what he is planning (at the same U.).

thanks for the response mkm56. Best of luck to your son!

Does anyone have any advice or insight?

Take ochem in a sequence during your senior year. ochem 2 builds itself from ochem 1 so it is wise if you take it in a sequence otherwise you'll forget.

I took general chem 2 over the summer and that was not fun. It's probably better (and more fun) if you do a research/internship program over the summer instead of taking a hardcore science class.

Awesome. Thanks sakura812!
