Organic Chemistry at Cornell

Aim for 1.3 standard deviations above the mean (A) or if you really want 1.5 (A+). I believe 1 standard deviation is an A-

Alright. I started prepping for orgo since the beginning of this year, so hopefully I’ll be done with the material by the time I actually take it.

Why would you waste your time doing that? There’s no advanced prep needed to do well in orgo. It’s a fairly straightforward class. Medium difficulty, I’d say.

What’s chem 1057? I was strong in general chemistry, but I took it somewhere else and I guess it has nothing to do with orgo. I’m definitely going to take advantage of the free tutoring services. I’m assuming to not take physics with orgo right? It’ll be my first semester so I don’t want to overload myself since I’m going to be working part time…

There’s no one-size-fits-all advice. Certainly a lot of people take physics with orgo together. In fact, most premeds will do that. And it’s possible to do well. The semester I took physics and biochem with orgo I received a 4.1, which ended up being one of my better semesters. Whether you want to take physics and orgo together will depend on your own comfort level and confidence. But, you are correct that orgo and gen chem bare little resemblance to each other.

1057 is a supplemental night class held by jane walcott.its basicaly 2 hours every monday night reviewing what you learned in the course. extra help never hurts, it would be a shame to waste it. and there are tutors everyday (except saturday) so definetely go for help. I might be a tutor next year so hope to see you guys.

Did you take it while you were in orgo or before? I might just take physics I/II in the summer back home at a local cc to knock those out of the way. If this course REALLY helps with orgo I think I’m going to take it. I’m a little nervous because it will be my first semester and a completely new environment.

There’s very little downside to signing up. I wouldn’t look at it like it’s a course. More like a semester-long review session. You don’t have to go to all of the sessions. You can always drop it if you feel it’s unhelpful.

its 1 credit, but not a real credit. its a transcript credit (i still dk what that means…). but you take it at THE SAME time you take orgo. theres another one for orgo 2 (chem 1058).

norcalguy is right, my friend went to some review sessions but not all of them (he didnt officially register, u dont have to register u can attend they wont know or care). But if you sign up you only have to attend like 7 out of 13 to get a satisfactory. dont sweat it, once you get here and try the class out im sure u will fit. dont fret :)

Thank you both for your responses. I will see how busy my schedule is and decide whether I should take or show up to a couple sessions if I’m having trouble.
