Orgo Chem Summer Intensive Program

Has anyone taken the week long Organic Chemistry Summer Intensive Program offered by WashU? This summer it runs from August 17-24. From the schedule, it looks like they have the time planned out for you from 9 am - 9 pm daily. If you took it, did you think it helped? If so, did the information received during the course help you all year or just give you a heads up for the first exam? Any thoughts on this program would be appreciated!

Hi. I'm attending the orgo chem intensive program on the 17th. I heard a lot of good things about it, and I want to get a head start. I took the intensive program for general chemistry and it really prepared me not only academically, but mentally, so I could hit the ground running on day one, while everyone else still has their mind back on vacation. It covers up until around the second test...or so i hear.

Thank you kb23

Is this program offered every summer?

is it just for upperclassmen, or can freshman attend?

Can’t believe this thread was resurrected nearly a year after I posted the question! D has been through the program, so now I have more information! In the past, the program WAS offered summer before freshman year and in January of freshman year for General Chemistry. D was a newby freshman and wasn’t interested in starting school early or going back early during the winter break at the time. She said if she knew what she knows now she DEFINITELY would have done it freshman year. She did SIP (summer intensive program) and JIP (January intensive program) this school year for organic chemistry and thought it was EXTREMELY beneficial. It basically gets you off to a good start for the first exam. These two courses are VERY difficult and the courses helped her to get nearly perfect scores on the first two exams of the semesters. This helps you both with your gpa for the course and your with your “psychological wellbeing” as you are slogging through the difficult material the rest of the semester.

Is this program still offered? I spent time last week looking into summer study options and did not see anything about this. Another thing about the dates, is that Aug 17-24 is when pre-orientation programs run for incoming freshmen. Is this a pre-orientation option?

kn - as I noted in my post #6, my initial post was last year (2008), so the August 17-24 dates would NOT be correct for this summer.

SIP is not one of the preorientation programs run for freshmen. As I recall, D got a letter from Cornerstone in the mail during the summer after h.s. about the program for gen chem (and a letter last summer about SIP for orgo offered before her soph year). And yes, SIP would run at the same time as the preorientation programs so I don’t think you could do both.

I went to Cornerstone’s page on the WashU site and went to their August calendar. SIP is on the calendar for August 16-22. When you click on SIP, you don’t get any details though.

If you want to know more, i.e. - will there be a gen chem SIP? when will they be sending letters to incoming freshmen? etc. I would send them an e-mail at cornerstone@wustl.edu or call them at 314-935-5970

My D will definitely jump on this in future. Good to know that it is run through Cornerstone. Thanks so much for the information.

Yes indeed - thanks for the info! I do remember my D getting the info on the Gen Chem SIP prior to starting as a freshman. The Cornerstone website sure is not very informative about these things.
