Which of the organic chemistry courses is the one that pre-meds should take in the Fall? I am also potentially planning to double major in the alternative Chemistry Major as well, will this course overlap and fulfill this requirement too?

Furthermore, will med schools frown upon us if we take the orgo course over the summer at Cornell?

the organic chemistry you want in the fall is CHEM 3570 (and then CHEM 3580 in the spring). you would need to take the lab CHEM 2150 either fall or spring semester. you could take it later, but if you think you might forget the basics of orgo it’s a lot easier to just take it while you’re doing the lecture.

it appears that that the alternative chemistry major only requires CHEM 1570 (so-called “baby orgo”), but that isn’t adequate for pre-meds. since 3570 is basically 1570 but with more credits and content, I’m sure 3570 would be fine to take its place. you’d want to check with the chemistry department just to make sure, but it seems like a very reasonable bet to me.

You can take orgo over the summer but I wouldn’t advise it. Orgo is already fast paced during the school year. You are screwing yourself over if you take it at an even more accelerated pace.

I also need to take Chem 3000 along with Chem 3570 for a pre-med track right?

no, only taking 3570, 3580, and 2150 will suffice for orgo. the only reason you would want to take 3000 would be if you wanted to take 3010 instead of 2150. that’s not really standard, and I don’t know anyone personally who is doing that, but perhaps it would work given that you have an extra interest in chemistry.

But if I wanted to double major in the Alternative Chemistry Major was well, then Chem 3000 is required right?

oh yes, that seems to be correct based on the PDF I’m looking at. the chemistry stuff is not my area of expertise. :)
