Orgo I

Just want to know from folks here that is it okay or any harm taking Orgo chem I without taking the orgo chem Lab together (fall semester). My son's advisor suggested that he wait until spring semester with Orgo II together. Any thoughts on that?? thanks

The way my school is set up, Orgo I is taken first, then Orgo II plus a two credit lab. Because the lab is two credits instead of one, that essentially is the lab for both courses in one class. I'm not sure if this is the situation you speak of, but if his adviser suggested it, then it's probably fine, as long as he gets the required lab courses done.

For my general chemistry, it's typically suggested that the main course plus labs are taken in this order: Chem I, Chem II + Lab I, Lab II. I personally took Chem I + Lab I and then Chem II + Lab II, but taking labs for a class after the class it pertains to is complete is clearly not an insane idea, at least for general chemistry, so I can't imagine it'd be much different for O chem.

My situation is similar to thenilesedge. Organic I and Organic II are separate 3-credit classes, and Organic Lab is its own 3-credit class that is usually taken alongside Organic II. As a result, the lab experiments cover chemistry from both Orgo I and II. In other words, your son should wait until spring to take the Lab with Orgo II as the advisor suggested.

We have Orgo I and II, each with their respective labs. Taking the lab later shouldn't have any negative effect.

I tend to think that taking the lab and the course together helps me understand the material better, but thats just me. But at my school you have to take them together so.

At my school, it similar to GoldShadow. Orgo 1 then Orgo 2 with lab. The lab covers topics/experiments from both orgo 1 and 2.

my school also does orgo I, then orgo II, and has a combined lab that covers the material in both that is taken separately. Most students here actually take it after finishing orgo II, rather than taking it concurrently

Thanks for the reponses. Orgo I & Orgo II each is 3 credit class and Orgo Lab is also a 3 credit class. My son found out from advisor that the lab is a combination work for both I & II. So, like most of you had stated that it's okay to take lab with II together in Spring semester.
