What school do you go to and did/do they charge you?

UC Merced is making UCM students pay for orientation.

Is this normal for all schools?

Oh and if we bring "guest" to the UCM orientation they also have to pay. My "guest" were going to be my dad, mom, sisters but now it's only going to be my dad b/c it cost too much.

Do you also have to pay for "guest" at other colleges?

You were suppose to tell me about your college orientation. But, since you asked, I'm bringing my dad because he wants to come...is that ok? Are you not suppose to bring you parent/parents to orientation?

Many parents go to orientation, or at least the first few days, especially if it's like a week long, and im pretty sure all school it's required you go and required you pay the fee..luvkily it's one time though

My school charged a fee for orientation, but I believe it was only if you were staying in the dorm overnight and eating your meals on campus for the two days you were there.

Parents weren't required to attend, but there were some "parent" sessions and some "student" sessions and some all together. I think the "parent" sessions were things like 'dealing with the stress of a child away from home', 'paying the u-bill', 'will my child be safe/entertained/taken care of if they're sick/etc' type sessions.

Oh and my school does all of their Orientation sessions in June, not immediately before school starts.

Students: $215.00
All new students are assessed a one-time matriculation fee in their first semester of enrollment, in addition to tuition and mandatory fees. The matriculation fee covers services and programs for new students including orientation/registration programs (Alive!, Transfer Registration Days, Spring Welcome), fall Week of Welcome activities, extended orientation events and university publications that students will receive during orientation and use while attending the university.

Parents: $140.00
Parents and/or guests planning to attend an Alive! new student orientation session during the summer will pay a program fee of $140. This fee includes:

Two nights stay in a residence hall
Meals while in session
Parking permit for your orientation session
Faculty reception/academic fair
University publications received throughout the program
An orientation notebook (a complete resource manual)
Workshop presentations and handouts
Parent program staffing

Our 'FirstSTEP' program is $50 I believe. I don't remember if it includes any guests or not. This includes lunch, information packet, and you register for the first semester that day.

I currently attend a UC school and went to orientation. I was charged I think $200 for a three day/two night experience. Honestly, I do not feel it was worth the price but it does help recoup some of the costs the school have during times of budget cuts and such.

Unless you live far away, I really don't see the point in inviting your whole family to orientation. The experience your parents get is probably not worth the extra cost. For my school, you did have to pay for inviting parents as well; at least for my year the parents also lived in the school dormitories as well but I think it might have changed this year.

Our orientation is 3 days, 2 nights, and it is paid for by the $200 deposit everyone has to pay when you decide to come here. It's $100 for students (2 nights in the dorms and all meals free, plus a t-shirt and a TONNNN of free stuff) and $50 per parent/guest (I'm not really sure what the parents get. they don't get free lodging, but they do get some meals and I think maybe a t-shirt). Usually people bring just one parent. you're only allowed to bring 2 guests though. If you don't use all the money from the deposit for orientation it rolls over in your bursar account and you can apply it to any other fees or things.

The complete opposite here: I was not charged for orientation (3 days right before the beginning of classes) and my college also explicitly discouraged parents from staying. After all, orientation is THE time to socialize and meet new people and hanging out with your family might hinder that process.

i think my orientation was $250 for students. that was for 3 days, 2 nights. we got all meals, lodging in AIR CONDITIONED rooms, and our superfan teeshirts.

i think it was $50 for each parent to come. both of mine wanted to come, i barely saw them the whole time actually after the welcome dinner. thye really enjoyed orientation and attended thigns on academic prgrams, study abraod, and financial aid. good thing they went cause we were so excited we wouldnt pay attention to those

im acutally really happy they came. mostly because its a 4 hour drive from home and i got to do that with them instead of by myself. i dont think right after HS graduation i wouldve been ready to take a bus/train into boston myself and then get to BC.. that wouldve been a bit overwhelming

i go to ucsd, and our orientation was expensive, because i had to drive from sac, and then pay 250 or so plus the extra 'guest' fee for my parents (practically everyone brought parents) ..i got lodging but my parents had to get a hotel, so we had to pay for that too...we ended up just extending our stay and making a mini summer vacation out of it since we were in la jolla anyways, lol

We have an entire parent program during orietation, so you barely ever even see them. I saw my mom only when I registered for classes, because she wanted to be there for that.

I'm going to Sonoma State...I had to pay for both myself and both of my parents to attend. It came out to about $440 (this does not include lodgings for my parents).
