Orientations start June 3.
I'll be going June 11.
No classes will fill up like PolSci 101 (~280 spots open) and a FYS (76 spots) and I'm worried that the people in the previous six orientations will fill up all the slots.

Also, the advisers don't bully you into classes they want you to take, right?

Yeah, they do. At least to some extent. However, you can ignore them. They will make you talk to an adviser, they won’t make you listen to them. By the way, I highly recommend ignoring them.

There seems to be pressure from the advisers to have you sign up for first year seminars. They may also try to talk you out of taking something you want to take. I would take their comments as advice to be considered by not as gospel. You should independently research and consider what you want to take and not rely on the adviser to tell you what to do.

Well I recently discovered on the online course catalog, I can still select classes (and presumably register for them). I’m not supposed to be doing that am I?

Totally fine to backpack early. In fact, your peer advisers will love you for it since you’re one less person to teach backpacking to. Or at least I would.

Re: FYS, I think a lot of advisers recommend them because they’re usually supposed to be more engaging “off the beaten path” classes, and they usually fulfill some requirement - nearly every class you take in your first year does anyway. I think a good amount of them don’t even get offered more than a few times.

soccerwolf- you are a senior…what does it matter if you miss some school…take a few days and go earlier! I am sure your school will understand…it is not like you are taking off school to go to Tahiti!

You can backpack but you definitely wll not be able to register for the class until the last day of orientation. It can be frustrating to watch the classes fill up while you wait for your appointment. My daughter had a class fill up during the half hour before her time. She was first on waitlist and eventually got in.

Missing the last month of school means missing the senior picnic, finals, prom, graduation, etc. Sorry… but those are still pretty important! lol

The backpacking process has multiple steps. Putting a class in the backpack does not save you a space in the class - it is a means to store classes of interest. The next step enrolls or waitlists you in the class and this you cannot do until the third day of orientation.

My kid, currently a freshman in CoE, was not able to attend Orientation and Registration until the third week in July last summer because of his summer job. Although he was able to get all his classes, some were not at the most desirous times. He was, however, able to switch his class schedule during the summer when more sections were opened up
